Bourke’s Luck Potholes

These beautiful natural rock formations that have been sculpted by sand and water over thousands of years are a popular tourist attraction in South Africa.
Located in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa at the very beginning of Blyde River Canyon are Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

These unusual and fascinating rock formations were formed over thousands of years as water from the Blyde and Treur Rivers whirled through and carved up the bedrock of the river. The resulting “potholes” are a curiosity and Bourke’s Luck Potholes is a very popular and famous tourist attraction. The pools of water inside the smooth looking naturally carved rock inside the canyon creates a colorful beautiful scene.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes is named for gold miner Tom Bourke who believed there was gold in the area and staked a claim. Bourke never really found much gold but he was right in thinking there was gold in the area which his son eventually found in a rich vein a little south of the original claim. Reportedly the son spent much of his life paying off Tom Bourke’s debts but did leave quite a fortune to his heirs.

The area is very tourist friendly as there are metal bridges above the potholes and walkways with railings at strategic locations for the best views of the potholes. A small visitor center is located at the site. The canyon itself is worth a look.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes is part of the famed Panorama Route in Mpumalanga which is well known for its dramatic landscapes. These abstracted rock sculptures certainly are a unique and fascinating place to visit and are part of many tours through South Africa.
