Sigthseeing Puerto Prinsesa Underground River in Palawan, Philippines.

                                                           Underground River Main Entrance

Sightseeing Puerto Prinsesa Underground River in Palawan on a solo trip was truly an invaluable travel experience for me. Known as the world’s longest navigable underground river and hailed as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, it is a must see above all other destinations in Puerto Prinsesa.

Travelling solo could be quite expensive but upon sound research and inquiries, I was able to pack my bag without the fear of spending too much. Well, one does not need to shell out a lot of money.

The Underground River is located in Barangay Sabang, which is about an hour and a half to reach by land from the town proper of Puerto Prinsesa. From Sabang Port, the motorboat ride to the cave takes 15 minutes. The following 1.5km-paddle boat tour inside the cave takes approximately an hour.

Since I stayed in one of the hotels in the town proper and without the assistance of any travel agency, I went directly to Puerto Princesa Office to get my entry permit. Likewise, tourists who are staying in the town proper and are not on tour through travel agencies may directly secure entry permit in the same office located on the front side of Badjao Inn. Badjao Inn is just along Rizal Avenue and a few minutes away from the airport. Proper identification document is required to get the permit which will take a few minutes to process. However, a copy of plane ticket will be helpful upon getting the desired or right schedule to tour the cave most especially during peak season. To date, the fees comprise of P215 and includes permit fee (P175 ) and environmental fee (P40) at the tourism centre in Barangay Sabang. Paddle boat fee is included in the permit fee.

The cheapest way to get to Sabang is through Lexus Shuttle at the bus terminal. Making seat reservations is done through text message. The rate to get there per person is just P140.00. At drop off point, it is necessary to make early seat reservations back to the town proper. Lexus Shuttle Van charges P200 for foreign tourists. It is important to note the schedule of the van going to and fro Sabang: 7:30AM, 8:30AM, 10AM, 3PM, 4:30PM. Lexus Shuttle Van may be reached through these numbers: 0912-100-2651, 0917-585-9602
