Asia: Six Places to See Before You Die

Another collection of must-visit destinations in Asia.

1. The Forbidden City, China

The Forbidden City situated at the center of the ancient city of Beijing and was built between 1406 and 1420 during the Ming Dynasty.It was one of the important historical monuments listed in 1961 and was nominated as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. It consist of 90 courtyards and palaces, 8,704 rooms and 980 buildings. The Forbidden City was the world’s largest palace complex or palatial structure and China’s best preserved imperial palace, it also called the “Palace Museum”.

2. Hagia Sophia, Turkey

Hagia Sophia or Santa Sophia, massive cathedral raised in Constantinople (now Istanbul) by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I; completed in A.D. 537. It’s name means “Holy Wisdom” in Greek, and it was the greatest achievement on Byzantine architecture. Turned into a mosque after the Turkish conquest (1453), it is now a museum

3. The Great Wall, China

World’s longest wall fortification, in Northern China. It extends over 1,500 mi (2,400 km), roughly following the southern border of the Mongolian plain. Construction was begun in the Ch’in dynasty (third century B.C.) to defend China against invasion from the north and mostly completed during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It’s average height is 25 ft (7.6m); it is wide enough (about 12ft./3.6 m) for people on horseback to ride along it.

4. The Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Majal mausoleum built by the Mugol Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtazi-Mahal at Agra in North India. Faced in white marble, the central domed tomb stands on a square block with a minaret at each corner, surrounded by water gardens, gateways, and walks. It took some 20,000 workers over 20 years to complete (1630-1650).

5. Cherry Blossom Viewing, Japan

Japan is the best place to do Cherry Blossom Viewing or Hanami. (Hanami pronounced as Hah nah mee, means Hana – Flower, mi – watch). It was been a Japanese cultural tradition and celebrated since 7th century. There are over 400 hundred varieties of Cherry Blossom tress in Japan. Somei-Yoshino (Yedoensis) is the most popular kind of Japanese cherry tress which you can be viewed everywhere.

6. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The Angkor Wat in Cambodia is a humankind’s most enduring and astonishing architectural achievements, also, one of the greatest complexes of ancient temples in South-East Asia. It was built from A.D. 879 to approximately 1200 and used for 400 years during the kings of Khmer civilization.  In 1992, UNESCO made it a World Heritage site.

Some wonderful tourist sights, each one well worth a vist. I am sorry to say that I have not been to any of them, However I would like to see at least one.
