Australian Seafaring Adventure Full of Dragons

The time has come once again for the ten-day festivities to begin celebrating a local South Pacific fish.

The Leafy Sea Dragon Festival began April 17th down under; it is a ten-day observance of a fragile yet highly-adapted bony fish living off the coast of Australia and a day of environmental awareness as a whole. The Australian celebration is hosted by the District Council of Yankalilla biannually and this is an on-year. It inspires local productivity in the arts, local culture and reminds guests to revere the natural world surrounding them. Events of all sorts come to the Fleurieu Penninsula, attracting spectators and participants in the thousands.

The Leafy Sea Dragon is the symbol of South Australia and is indigenous to Southern Australian waters. Related to the seahorse; the leafy sea dragon, along with its other cousin, the weedy sea dragon, has evolved camoflauge adaptations which give it an uncanny resemblance to the marine vegetation where it makes its home; and like seahorses, sea dragons of both varieties have pregnancies succeeding fertilization. While weedy sea dragons are a bit hardier in captivity, Australia helps resist the trade of leafy sea dragons, as they are extremely fragile and have a low chance of survival in home aquariums; because of Australian regulations the captive leafy sea dragon is an extremely rare, expensive, and hard-to-purchase commodity outside of public aquaria.
