Beautiful Darwin Falls is a Death Valley Waterfall

Darwin Falls exists in the hottest and driest place in North America.
Darwin Falls is a notable waterfall because it is located in Death Valley in California which is one of the hottest driest places on planet earth. Darwin Falls is really two main waterfalls with a few smaller falls sprinkled in between. The Upper Falls is some 50 feet in height and the Lower Falls some 30 feet high. The falls are along Darwin Creek which is mainly fed by springs which is why Darwin Falls can exist in such a dry arid area.

Darwin Falls is named for Dr Erasmus Darwin French who lead expeditions into the Death Valley area in the mid 1800’s in the hopes of striking it rich by finding a silver lode. He never found any silver but miners in the area named their town Darwin and the waterfalls nearby Darwin Falls in his honor.

Darwin Falls can be reached by taking Route 190 West out of the resort town of Panamint Springs for roughly one mile. Then look for a dirt road heading south with a sign for Darwin Falls and take that for a couple of miles to the trail-head to the falls.

Nice write up. I lived out in the southern part of the Mojave Desert near Victorville back in the late 70s and was not aware of this in Death Valley.
