He was once part of the Endeavour Inn where I worked and served many tourists and locals.

The Inn later became a favourite with travellers when it was coverted into backpackers accomadation. The facility is long gone, but the Captain is still standing and is a huge hit with all who see him.

There have been loud whispers of re-locating the icon to Cooktown which was named after the famous British explorer, some 300km  north of Cairns.

However, the people of Cairns love him and don’t want him to be moved.

He recently had a make-over, thanks to some local businesses who put in the time and money(to the tune of $30,000.00).

If you are ever a visitor to Cairns, I hope he will still be there on Sheridan Street to greet you and say good-bye when you leave. Those who have been here , I hope you will remember our captain with fond memories.

Happy travelling and stay safe.

Anna.

I think it GREAT that they are taking care of him. There was a Paul Bunyun that used to stand in southern Arkansas back in the 60’s. It was gone by the 70’s. SAD.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Milton for sharing. So much history to share on opposite sides of the oceans.Perhaps you can find out what happened to Paul Bunyun and make that your next topic. Our Captain has been standing for over 30 something years. I worked there 1982-83.
