A Tour Guide to Shanghai, The Largest City in China.
Shanghai, a major hub of communications and international exchange in China, is located at the center of the east coastline of china. It is the largest city in China, with a population of 188,846,000 (by the end of 2008). The municipality covers 6,341 square kilometers, including the counties around.
Convenient transportation makes this large city active and vigorous – you can easily get there and travel around in the city. There are special tourist trains and buses, which make your travel much more convenient. Star-rated hotels spots with a relatively reasonable density all over the city. Shanghai is a modern metropolis with so many places of interests for you to pay visits to.
The Bund
The Bund is the first place for the first-time visitors, for its gorgeous riverside views and leisurely cruises on Huangpu River. When you are on a tourist ship on the river, you can enjoy the scenic views of a metropolis near the bund. On the west bank of Huangpu River, you can see the Holland Bank, Peace Hotel, and some other old buildings, which were built nearly 100 years ago. To the east, you can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower (the highest in China), Global Financial Center (the second highest building in China). You can never imagine how wonderful the scene is unless you experience it by yourself. There are shopping malls, hotels, restaurants nearby, which make you enjoy your travel more. Cruising on the river, you can see the mighty skyscrapers on both sides of the banks, and you can also view the ruins of ancient cannon emplacements and fortifications at Wusong and the magnificent view of the Yangtze River.
The Yu Garden
After you enjoy the cruise on Huangpu River, you can pay a visit to the Yu Garden, which is located about 500 meters on the west bank from the river. With a history of more than 400 years, it is a classical garden in the Southern Chinese style. Zigzagged paths in the garden can make you lost your way. You should have a tour guide to lead you to enjoy the interesting places inside of the garden. All the pavilions, halls, rockeries and ponds will give you surprises. The garden is separated by latticed walls, winding corridors, and lattice windows, and each path can show something wonderful to you. The price of the ticket to this garden is $10.
East Nanjing Road – Pedestrian Street
From Yu Garden, you can take a taxi or follow a tourist group to pay a visit to East Nanjing Road, the Pedestrian Street part. It is a place famous for shops and neon lights. The best time to go there is in the evening, when you can enjoy the glorious neon lights – most of them are the advertisement or names of the shops or department stores or restaurants. They neon lights make this part of East Nanjing Road extraordinary beautiful. Meanwhile, you can buy clothes or anything other things you want of the famous bands and you can get the best sells and bargains, too. It is really a marvelous place in Shanghai, and it is always crowded – all year around!
People’s Square
Next to the Pedestrian Street of East Nanjing Road, you will find People’s Square, the political and cultural center in Shanghai since 1994. In and around the square, there are some places for your entertainment and enjoyment: a massive fountain named the Light of Huangpu River, 10,000 square meters of lawns, six groups of relief carvings that depict the history of Shanghai, an underground shopping plaza, the New Shanghai Museum, the offices of the municipal government, the Shanghai Grand Theater and the Shanghai Exhibition Center. There is a free garden there, too. It offers places for you to have a rest.
The Orient Pearl TV Tower
If you go eastward after the cruise on Huangpu River, you can pay a visit to the Orient Pearl TV Tower, which is 468 meters high, the tallest in Asia and third tallest in the world. The tower faces the Bund across the Huangpu River. The diameter of the first sphere is 45 meters, and it is 263 meters above ground. The observation decks inside offer a panoramic view of the city. The revolving restaurant is 267 meters above the ground. The dance ball, piano bar and 20 karaoke rooms are also opened to the public. The penthouse, which sits at 350 meters, has an observation deck, meeting room, and coffee shop. The ticket is about $11.
The Century Square and the Science Museum
The Century Square and the Science Museum, together with the Century Park, offer the most wonderful views around that area. It is an opening place, where people can fly kites. Some people like to practice their rolling skills with their roller skating shoes or roller skating board. There are always amusements there if the weather is fine. If you go further to the east, you will see the panoramic views of the century park. A giant clock slopes in front of the No. 1 gate of the park.
The Century Park
The Century Park is full of trees of all the seasons, and it is divided into four sections: spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. A lake is located in the center of the park, and a river runs across the southern part of it. Sometimes, there are concerts and exhibitions in it. If you are lucky, you may have the chance to join the madding crowd.
Lu Xun Park
Lu Xun Park is famous for an imminent Chinese writer, named Zhou Shuren, whose alias name is Lu Xun. Lu Xun Museum and tomb are located in Lu Xun Park. The museum exhibits Lu Xun’s manuscripts, documents, and photos. It is located in Hongkou District of Shanghai, and it is not far from Hongkou Stadium.
