Turtle Island is a lovely paradise located on the northwestern most edge of the Fijian archipelago. I

There are two main seasons in Turtle Island, those being Summer (spanning from November until April); and, Winter (including the months of May through November).

Turtle Island was the location for the film entitled: “The Blue Lagoon” made in 1980.

The island is a secluded private island which, most unfortunately, suffered from years of neglect. However, the island has recently, prospered and flourished under new ownership. This new rebirth has included the establishment of approximately 300,000 trees; the creation of wetlands; and the maintenance of the coral reefs by taking measures to reduce erosion.

Additionally, to the island’s credit, a five star hideaway permits accommodations for a total of fourteen couples.

The island’s turtles are protected by way of a public auction wherein the winner’s name is etched onto the shell of the turtle. The turtle is then, once again, let loose on the island. The turtle’s commercial aspect has been destroyed by the etching; therefore, no one is likely to turn the turtle’s shell into a souvenir (as is the case on many of the islands.) The funds from the auction are redistributed into ecological projects.

There is, as well, an organic garden providing more than ninety percent of the island’s vegetable and herb products. This self-sufficiency carries on in way of an apiary that produces an impressive thirty liters of honey, monthly. Reservoirs and springs provide an adequate water supply.

Solar heaters are responsible for greatly reducing the (island’s) overall energy consumption and composting methods and recycling efforts reduce waste.

The island, itself, is bordered by beautiful coral reefs as well as a fantastic assortment of sea life. This makes for a fabulous underwater adventure as was prefaced (at the beginning of this article.)

Conclusively, Turtle Island is a fine symbol of perfect conservation and paradise renewed.
