This article talks about the architecturally beautiful 7th century AD rock cut temple.

Rock cut Shiva Temple is located at a corner in the Tiger’s Cave complex. Tiger’s Cave is located at a village named Saluvankuppam on East Coast Road (ECR) between the cities Chenni and Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, India. The distance of Tiger’s cave is 5 km from Mamallapuram and around 42 km from Chennai.

Similar to Tiger’s cave and other sculptures in the nearby Mamallapuram city, the rock cut Shiva temple was also built during Pallava era sometime between 7th century AD and 9th century AD.

The temple has Shiv linga and Nandi idols. The temple is located below from the ground level and you can easily climb on the roof of the temple to pose for photograph. The temple also has some rock carvings depicting images of goddess Durga killing demons. The shrine also has rock carvings of the image of Lord Shiva.

You can also visit Tiger’s Cave, ancient Muruga temple unearthed by Tsunami, and the nearby beach along with this serene and calm ancient temple.

The rock cut temple of Shiva near Chennai is definitely an architectural marvel which you should not miss.

You can easily reach the site either by public transport or on your own as the site is located well on the high road.
