New Year New School

As the end of the Christmas holidays comes to an end, the boys’ are getting prepared to start the school year at a new school. How will they go? Will they make friends?
The beginning of the school year is always a little bit nerve racking. However, this year is more nerve racking than usual. Why? Because both Tyson and Taj have started at a new school. Even though we haven’t moved from the area, we decided to change school after Tyson started showing signs of depression at the old school (after transition into mainstream).
Both boys progressed up a grade after last year – Taj is in a pre primary – grade 1 class, while Tyson is in a combined grade 2 and 3 class. Okay, the thought of Tyson having to complete the work that will be required of him did have me worried, especially when he only completed term 4 of grade 1 in a mainstream situation.
Honestly, I needn’t have worried. After two days at the new school, Tyson is doing exceptionally well. Where last year there were minor problems when asked to complete a task, that seems to be a thing of the past. After two days, Tyson’s teacher is most impressed with him.
Naturally, the only concerns I have about Taj is his hyperactivity and whether or not he remembers to go to the toilet in time. I know that Taj will be able to complete the tasks required of him, although he may have to be asked a few times just to make sure he is paying attention. Okay, his mathematics aren’t the best and his writing is a little bit scratchy. Thankfully, being in the class that he is in, Taj will be able to complete the easier work.
Tyson has already made a couple of friends. I only hope that they are actual friends and not just someone who Tyson has attached himself to because they were talking about him. Social interactions/cues are where Tyson’s autism spectrum disorder is noticible. I have to admit, Tyson does try his hardest to be nice to everyone. I just hope that they are nice to him in return.
Yes, Taj has made friends too. Being the social butterfly that he is, Taj never has any problems making friends. I only wish that he would be a little bit more careful. The day of school saw Taj come home with grazed knees, which I can handle. However, day two Taj came home with a great big scratch down the inside of his nose. According to Taj “I ran the wrong way round the tree and hurt it, it tried to get me but I won, I still have my eye”.

Pretty nasty, isn’t it? Taj said that it didn’t hurt and that he’s new friends took him to the teacher. Even though Taj has mentioned about his eye, I don’t think he realises just how lucky he is/was.
I am really glad that I took the step and enrolled the boys at the new school.
Here is to a good year for 2012 (and no more accidents – yeah, right!)
