Twenty Eight World Records of Indonesia

by Eunice Tan on 10/11/08 at 7:18 am

This is my list of 28 Indonesian world records.

Recently I watched America – Indonesia dialogue on television. In the dialogue, one of American panellists said most of U.S. citizens know nothing about Indonesia. I remember that in his book, “Audacity of Hope”. U.S. president Barack Obama also wrote that most American didn’t know where is the location of Indonesia on the map. Back to the dialogue, an American audience asked what Indonesian government do to introduce Indonesia to American. Well, due to some difficulties, actually the Indonesian government still don’t do much thing to make Indonesia more familiar to the world. When I joined Triond, I intended to write things about Indonesia. However after some months passes, I still don’t write much about my country. I would like to start writing some contents about Indonesia. There are so many subjects as there are so many diversities in Indonesia. In this article I limit myself to write about Indonesian world records only. Indonesia is rank 2, 3 or 4 in many things, but I won’t write about those in this writing and will spare other things for other writings. In this writing I compile some of Indonesian world records.

Indonesian World Records:

1. Indonesia is world’s largest archipelago state, comprising of 17,504 islands. Six thousand islands are inhabited.

2. Indonesia is the largest maritime state. The oceans and seas are 93,000 square kilometres and the coastlines are about 81,000 kilometres or about 25% of entire world’s coastline.

3. Java is the world’s most populous island. About 60% of Indonesian citizens (about 130 million people) lived in Java, which is only 7% of Indonesian territory. The population density is about 940 people per square kilometre.

4. Indonesia has most tribes in the world, consist of 740 tribes/ ethnics. In Papua island alone, there are 270 tribes.

5. Indonesia has most languages and dialects. There are 583 languages and dialect from 67 main languages.

6. Indonesia’s seismic and volcanic activity is highest in the world. Eruption of Toba super volcano, about 70,000 years ago, was one of the largest eruptions ever. Recent disaster due to seismic activity includes the 2004 tsunami that killed an estimated 167,736 in Aceh, northern Sumatera.

7. The oldest ancient man (Pithecanthropus Erectus) was found in Java island. The ancients man is predicted lived 1,8 million years a go.

8. Indonesia is the first country that proclaimed its independence after World War II in 1945. Indonesian Republic is the 70th country in the world, and Indonesia is the only nation that struggled and fought for its independence, not a gift from colonizer.

*Eunice : good on you mate, you article is very informative. I agree with you that Indonesia is not ‘that’ popular compared to Bali, until recently when the terrorism’s outbreak, the name of Indonesia becomes very infamous. Btw…Do you know that before fridges are invented, European used to use nutmeg for preserved meat…? n on more thing, I have never heard that pygmies also live in Indonesia, what I understand so far only in Africa…anyway good article. Love it.

Eunice, thanks for sharing these facts about Indonesia, some of them amazing. I had hoped to go to Aceh after the disaster, to debrief with rescue workers, but it didn’t work out. I have several friends who do live and work there though.

Leo, Papaleng, Eddie: Nice for Indonesian to have Philippines as friend and neighbor.
Chan Lee Peng, Marry, Johnny, Liane: Thanks for your nice comments.
Reef: Even komodo is found in Indonesia. Indonesia is rich in flora and fauna diversity. Rank no.2 after Brazil.

Very educational and informative. Nice to know Indonesia resisted colonization. Perhaps that’s the reason like Thailand, Indonesia preserved much of its ancient ways and culture. My personal experience is people from these countries are more genteel than those that are colonized (like HK and Singapore). You’ve got to tell us more about Indonesia.

Interesting info. The Spice Island of Moluccas, Indonesia was the destination of Ferdinand Magellan. Although he did not live to survive the voyage, his expedition was the first to circumnavigate the world.

Wow, lovely place – so many languages. This means you probably speak at least 5 of them. I would love to visit Indonesia some day but will definitely avoid Sulawesi, where that long snake/python lives. :)
