Vacation in Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto has been the capital city for more than ten centuries before the Emperor of the Japan decided to move the government to Tokyo. But there was one thing the Emperor could never move; Kyoto has over 2,000 temples and shrines. Further more, during your vacation in Kyoto you will come across on 14 major sites in the city with UNESCO World Heritage status and another three near the city.

Although Kyoto doesn’t have its own airport, that shouldn’t bother you too much. This is because near by town of Osaka has two airports and there is also a good railway between two cities. Here are some things you should definitely visit during your vacation in Kyoto.

World Heritage Sites

There are fourteen UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kyoto. Although their names are hard to remember, you should try learning at least couple of them. Nijo Castle, Nishi Honganji, and Toji Temple are located in the Central Kyoto. They are designed to perfection, truly breathtaking sites. Once you see them, it feels like you came back into the time of samurais, kabuki actors and geishas. These sites have retained the ambience of old and they will give you a vivid impression of what traditional Japan was like. UNESCO World Heritage sites are a must see during your vacation in Kyoto. And don’t forget to visit pavilion of Kinkaku-ji. It is one of Kyoto’s most famous attractions.

Imperial Palaces and Villas

It’s true that in some parts of Kyoto are covered with concrete, steel and neon, but there are some places that still reflect the physical environment of the old political capital of Japan. These are the Imperial Palace, Sento Imperial Palace, Katsura Imperial Villa, and Shugakuin Imperial Villa. The best time to visit them is during spring when cherries blossom. It’s important to say that cherries have very important significance in Japanese culture. They symbolize the cycle of life and how our lives blossom and fall. Make sure you learn this before your vacation in Kyoto because Japanese love symbolism. You can also choose to spend your vacation in Kyoto during autumn when you will be able to see a riot of colors that will enchant you.

Banks of the Kamo River

No wonder many people who have been to a vacation in Kyoto say that it is a sightseer’s paradise. The banks of the Kamo River are the favorite destination of many Japanese and tourists during summer months. They all come here in search for refreshment. If you are lucky, you will even have an opportunity to see a group of fire dancers and drum players who sometimes hold free performances. It’s a must see during your vacation in Kyoto. You will be able to see how citizens of this beautiful city live and have fun.

Hills of Arashiyama

Once on a vacation in Kyoto you must visit Western Kyoto and hills Arashiyama. As you approach, you’ll enjoy the view on hills covered with trees and once you get there you will be able to visit many historic and natural wonders.

And if all this is not enough for you, let’s just say that Kyoto has 1,700 temples, 300 shrines, imperial palaces, gardens and traditional wooden homes. Maybe it seems like you can never visit all of these places during your vacation in Kyoto, but if you are the persistent tourist you will soon discover its Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines that immediately catch your attention.
