The Railway Journey

A railway journey from Karachi to Rawalpindi.

Last month Father and I went to enquire after the health of my uncle. We hired a Tonga and reached the railway station. There was a great rush in front of the booking office. My father bought two first class tickets and reached Platform no. 2 where the train was waiting for us. We got into first class compartment. The compartment was fully packed. But I was fortunate to get a seat near the window. A villager and his wife were also sitting in the same compartment. They had second-class tickets with them. So a Travelling Ticket Examiner asked them to go to a second-class compartment. The train started at 9 a.m. I enjoyed the green fields and pleasant verdure on either side of the railway line. The train stopped at some important big railway stations like Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Gujrat, Lalamusa and Jehlum. Passengers getting in and passengers getting out often exchanged hot words. There was a terrible noise made by the coolies and vendors. We saw a women quarrelling and men crying to pacify them. It was about 4 p.m. when we reached Rawalpindi. We engaged a coolie who bought our luggage out of the station. We made for our destination.
