Caramoan Peninsula: A New Travel Destination

by Leo Reyes on 22/06/08 at 8:07 am

This is about Caramoan Peninsula, a new travel destination in Southern Luzon, Philippines.

Tired and bored of going to and seeing the usual travel spots? Plan your visit to Caramoan Peninsula, a beautiful and unspoiled travel destination waiting to be discovered.

Caramoan is a coastal town of Camarines Sur in the Southern Luzon corridor of the Philippines. It is host to a group of small islands with white sand beaches and unspoiled mountain ranges. The islands of Caramoan have remained pristine and undeveloped through the years mainly due to lack of infrastructure like roads and bridges that links the town to the other parts of the region. Caramoan town, in the recent past and during wet or rainy seasons, was isolated from the rest of the towns of Camarines Sur and connected only by sea lanes or water transpiration for its commercial survival.

This potential tourist destination has caught the attention of the regional as well as the national government of the Philippines when the crew of the well viewed TV series, “Survivor” visited the area and later decided to use GOTA Island, one of the major islands facing Pacific Ocean, as the venue for the filming the “Survivor” TV series. The executives of the production company as well as the crew and the cast must have been hooked to the beauty and serenity of the islands that they have in fact extended their stay to do more footage of the popular TV series.

Gota Island

For now, the islands part of Caramoan remained closed and off limits to tourists as well as the residents of the islands and vicinity. With the end of filming of the “Survivor” TV Series in the later part of the year, the pristine beaches and the beautiful islands of Caramoan will again be opened to the residents and visitors. And since these beautiful islands will be shown to the international audience with the showing of the “Survivor” TV Series, the people in Caramoan are preparing for the influx of international travelers and tourists who want to see for themselves the place where the “Survivor” TV Series was actually filmed.

Here are some of the smaller islands of Caramoan:

Here are some shots of the beach area:

Plans for Caramoan Peninsula

You will be surprised to know that Caramoan Peninsula will become a world class tourism destination in a few years.

Realizing its tourism potential, the provincial government of Camarines Sur has set in motion an ambitious plan to transform the Caramoan Peninsula into an upscale tourism site. This includes the upgrading and construction of a hi-way that will shorten travel time to Caramoan and a possible construction of an airport in the area. Plans have been drawn and finances have been secured to jumpstart the transformation of the area into a major tourist attraction.

Gota is not an island as it is not geographically separate from the peninsular land mass. please give tips on how to get there, recommend places to stay, what to do best (activities), ideal duration of stay, etc.

Gota is a beach, not an island. And it was a French TV series called “Koh Lanta” that was similar to “Survivor” that filmed an entire season there.
I have been there twice, and the place is truly amazing. It is not easy to get there, though. It was at least two hours by sea. The outrigger that takes you plies along the coast of the peninsula, and the water can be pretty rough. It takes even longer by land. The road zigzags through the mountains and has portions that are unpaved. There are no resorts, only small inns at the town center which is still a long tricycle ride away from the beaches.
It has great tourism potential, but developers must be careful not to pose too much of an impact on the environment.

Thank you guys for your comments. I stand corrected on my description of Gota.

I wish the government will get serious in putting in the infrastracture to make the place acessible to everyone.

Caramoan is really a beauty. There are lots of beaches that you can explore. Not only gota beach or sabitan laya. There are more beautiful beaches far ahead and one of them is lahuy island. Experience the beautiful sunrise while sitting on the white beach of Oring (one of the barangay of caramoan)or even just sit on the sea wall and you can see one beauty of nature. Please dont forget to bring camera or video cam with you. From the darkness in the night turning the sky in red orangy color sky to the beauty of sunrise.I would say 2 to 3 days will not be enough for you to enjoy the Caramoan paradise.First aid kit and flashlight is a must to bring along with you. I can say this because i was born in Oring Caramoan Camarines Sur Phillippines. But i’m not there at the moment and i really miss back home.

I agree with you Leo. I wish the government will get serious in putting infrastractures to make the places accessible to everyone. But i do wish too that the government should consider Caramoanons who will be affected by the changes. Example if the government is planning to put a domestic airport, where is the best place in Caramoan? What will happen to the owner of the land who will be affected by this? What if thats the only piece of land that that person owns and the only source of income? Will the government be willing to pay enough for that person or family equally to move out from the place?

Caramoan is so serene and beautiful. If you are the type of traveler that wants to enjoy the gifts of mother nature and not the bar and pubs that we can visit in the metropolis,it is one of the best place to visit. You can find simple, affordable and comfy inns and restaurants/carinderia in the town center for you to stay and eat.Sabitan laya, matukad island, lahus island, manlawi are some of the islands that you have to visit. Its nice to start your island hopping and see the sunrise at the grotto at the Mt Caglago in brgy tabgon. The people of caramoan are very hospitable and friendly..Vice Mayor Cesar his wife Tita Lydia, Philip and their relatives and Manoy Sonny Sy thanks for all the help in making our stay in Caramoan enjoyable and memorable.

Kadlagan Outdoor Shop & Services
The One of the 1st Tour guiding Services in Caramoan since 1989
So much happened at Caramoan peninsula after the French Survivor reality series which was held at the said place last summer 2008..The hidden beautiful place which was hidden and only for backpackers destinations for a long time ago becomes now so popular to the world. The young, energetic, dynamic Hon.Gov. L-Ray Villafuerte developed Caramoan as prime Eco Tourism destination in Camarines Sur. He established world class resort in Gota which is now attracting a lot of tourist all over the world. He revolutionalized the Tourism by making Cam Sur as the number 1 tourist destination in Bikol. CWC(Camarines Sur Wakeboarding Center) as the number 1, Caramoan as the 2nd place and 3rd is the Donsol Whale Shark interaction as the 3rd place (according to Deparetment of Tourism data of influx of domestic and foreign tourist in the Bikol region. Anywhy,Caramoan peninsula still retained its adventure, backpacking and outdoor appeal because of the environmental
efforts of the Governor L-Ray Villafuerte to regulate, preserve and conserve the natural beauty of the place. It did not turn into Boracay type atmosphere which more of the conservationis and environmentalists concerns…Caramoan peninsula is still hidden, far and still unexplored and mysterious as it used to be.
Chronology of tourism in caramoan:
Before-So litle was known about Caramoan. It just a simple town in Camarines Sur.People are involved in trading/fishing/farming.The town was still influence with left leaning group.
1982-Fr.Felix Barela was assigned in Caramoan and he
the statue of Blessed Virgin Mary of peace which is situated at the top of Mt.Caglago,tabgon,Caramoan.It started as a pigrimage tour to caramoan of priests, nuns and believers who visited the shrine. After their religious tour to the grotto, Father Felix Barela sidetrip the guests to the beautiful islands. The blessed statue started the tourism in Caramoan.
1983-1998-local Mountaineers(us as a part of it),backpackers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts came in caramoan to explore, discover, hike and camp at the best islands, beaches, caves and mountains.
1983-2004-Former Governor and now Hon congressman of 2ND District of Camarines Sur-Luis R.Villafuerte promoted the caramoan extensively by promotional ads,in trade fair, magazines, photo contests, etc.to the world.
2004-Present-The Present, energetic, young and good looking, flamboyant, workaholic, industrious> Hon.Governor L-Ray Villafuerte who made Cam.Sur well known to the world by creating the 1ST WORLD CLASS Wake Boarding Center CWC) in the Philippines, also developed the gota beach into a world class resort. He aggressively promoted Caramoan to
the world through magazines,newspapers,etc., hosting
of different events & activities such as the French Survivor,Israel survivor series.Caramoan is now attracting a lot of tourist from all over the world and made Camarines Sur as the number one(1) tourist attraction in Bikol because of Him.

To my readers from Caramoan.

Since I posted this article about a year ago, I’ve been asked by readers from around the world to write more about Caramoan. Most of them are aware that the place is really nice and worth visiting but they want more info.

I will be doing a part2 of the article so that we can help in promoting Caramoan as a topnotch travel destination.

Please send me more information about the recent developments in Caramoan particularly the planned infrastructure development like roads, airport, etc. and when these facilities will be operational.

Also I need a list of accredited resorts, hotels, eating places and other facilities that we can offer. Pictures of tourist attractions and related info will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.
