Gathering of the Seven Ethnic Tribes Draw Together People From Different Places in the World

by Anne McNew on 08/03/09 at 6:17 am

The only authentic native festival in the Philippines, “Kaamulan” means the gathering of the people in the seven tribes of Bukidnon in its longest and colorful festival.

Kaamulan Festival 2009 commenced in February 18, opening its Garden Show, Food Fest, Kaamulan Bazaar, Agri-Fair, Live Stock Show at the Provincial Capitol Grounds. Every day different band group performs on the Capitol stage. Horse back riding, moto-cross open, rodeo are among its crowd drawer activities. All of these are open and free for public viewing. The last part would be the longest parade of state workers, representatives from the different recognized non-government organization’s and business establishments in the province during its 92nd Foundation Day on March 10.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano witnessed this colorful event who said that among the different cultural festivals in the country, only Kaamulan Festival is authenticated to be a true native in its nature. It showcases the lives and activities of the original seven tribes in the province of Bukidnon.

March 7 marks the most colorful date for the festival as people from different places in the world gather along the national highway towards the Capitol grounds to witness the very colorful Street Dancing and Ground presentation competition. Each contingent comes with their own float depicting what their municipality is all about. The float must be made using indigenous materials found in their locality.

Here’s some of the floats:

The province has seven ethnic tribes namely: Tala-andig, Higaonon, Umayamnon, Manobo, Tigwahanon, Matigsalug and Bukidnon. Seen on photo are two of the original natives of Bukidnon. The lady is wearing the original Bukidnon dress and the man had his ear pierced long years ago that is bigger than a bottle cap.

Tourism Secretary Durano amazed of the presentations and activities of the Festival announced that Kaamulan will now be included as among the major festivals in the country that will be officially endorsed by the Department of Tourism.

Is this the festival held in Malayblay, Bukidnon? Hope I’m not mistaken. I taught in Malaybalay for a year under the Jesuit Volunteers Program and I remember a colorful festival that was held in the Provincial Capitol. May mga nipa huts pa nga. That was many years ago. You have great pictures. Thanks for showcasing genuine Philippine culture thru this article.
