Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East, covering four – fifths of the Arabian Peninsula from the Red Sea to the Arabian Gulf. The total area is estimated at about 2,240,000 sq. km (864,869 sq. mi.) But a portion of the land area is desert. It is estimated that there are about 833,980 sq. km (322,000 sq. mi.) of desert land, mountains of rocks and mountains of sand dunes. While an area of about 1,406,020 sq. km (542,869 sq. mi.) are developed and much of
the oil deposits are found.

Historians claimed that in the 4th century BC, Arabia was the original home of the Semites. They moved to Mesopotamia and Palestine and later they were identified as Assyro-Babylonians,Canaanites and Amorites.
In the 5th century, some Historians recorded that an ancient civilization called Dilmun was found on the Arabian Peninsula, which dates from the latter stages of ancient civilizations along the Nile and in Mesopotamia. In the East coast around Bahrain and in the West were various civilizations, which controlled the land. These civilizations included Hebrew tribes, the Nabateans and later the Christians from Ethiopia.
The Southern part of Arabia was developed into a commercial center that specialized in the production of frankincense and myrrh. Those products were highly prized by the Romans. The place also became the trade market for silks, spices and precious stones brought from Indies and East Africa.
Arabia produced gold and copper those were transported to Northern civilizations. A very prosperous trading took place. A network of caravan routes started from Arabia to Egypt and Babylonia.
In the 7th century Islam, was founded with the coming of the prophet Mohammed. It was matured and expanded. Arabia became the center of the Islamic world, with Mecca and Medinah as the Holy Shrines. Mecca was the pilgrimage destinations of all Muslims world – wide that were and still are able to make the journey.

In that era, warring tribes between family kingdoms occupied the Central part of Arabia. While in the western region, the Ottoman Turks and their Egyptian and Hashemite – Arab allies exerted a nominal rule.
