Singapore: Southern Escape

Southeast Asia boasts some of the best resorts in the world. On a public scale, these win awards. On a guest’s scale, they are simply memorable.

The geographical location of Singapore makes it the crossroads between the East and the West. Often travelers visit the republic, and they also venture into the other parts of Asia through this strategic point. From the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (not far from Changi Airport), Bintan Island of Indonesia is but a 45-minute ferry ride away.

Located in the Riau Archipelago, Banyan Tree Bintan comprises 72 villas modeled on traditional Balinese architecture, designed and decorated with colloquial flavor. The resort encompasses the inimitable sight of lofty coconut trees by the talcum-white private beach of Tanjong Said. First impressions last.

What sets such accommodations apart from those of tall hotels is: one actually lives in a villa here, not a room. (Of course, the bill reflects this too.) Each villa is raised on stilts, perched on hillsides to facilitate a clear view of the bays and the South China Sea below.

Guests have a choice to stay at any of the Jacuzzi Villas On The Rocks, Water-edge Jacuzzi Villas, Valley Jacuzzi Villas and Pool Villas. Flanked by wooden decks, the two-bedroom Pool Villa blends into the forest surroundings and vista of the ocean. If you jumped into the pool and swim right to the end, and look down—the bay was just beneath you.

The story of Banyan Tree Phuket in Thailand can best be described as “from rugs to riches”. Or more specifically, it’s “from tortured terrain to award-winning resort”. Amongst its other awards, Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts bagged the Pacific Asia Travel Association’s 2001 Gold Award in the category of Corporate Environment Programme simply by leaving Mother Nature alone.

In planning the resort, great care was taken to ensure harmony—with the environment and Thai culture. The resort is marked by human-scale (not crane-scale) and low-rise buildings of not more than three storeys.

Bordered by golden sands and the gentle waves of the Andaman Sea, Banyan Tree Phuket is where tranquility and relaxation is kept continually in the foreground. From the serenity of its villas to the endearing pleasures of the water courts, here in the land of smiles, the word “ambiance” is well-defined.

With indoor gardens flanking the length of the private swimming pool and verdant landscapes outlining the façade. The Pool Villa ensures seclusion in tropical splendor. The Thai sala (thatched roof, pavilion-like construction) is the perfect setting for a meal under the stars, set against the backdrop of Bang Tao Bay.

Throw caution to the wind, and let the breeze uplift your senses.
