Review of The Peninsula Hotel Bangkok

The Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok is in a superb location and for those looking for a luxurious hotel.
I just want to start by saying that I have stayed in some of the best 5 star resorts worldwide including the U.S, Africa, the UK and South Pacific Islands, I generally choose the Four Seasons but decided, for our stay in Bangkok, that we would stay at the Peninsula. This decision was based on reviews that we had read on this hotel.
We were greeted at Bangkok airport by the hotel car pick up service. Our driver was prompt and friendly and got us to the hotel without any hassle. We arrived at around 11am and check-in was not till 2pm. However, when we arrived we were just taken straight up to our room and did not have to stop at the front desk and check in.
We stayed in a deluxe room which had a balcony overlooking the river. The room itself was extremely clean and spacious. The bathroom was quite large and had 2 separate basins, a big tub with a small plasma TV to watch and a separate shower. The toilet was actually in a separate room.
All that can be said about the service was that it was outstanding. It seemed that there was always someone there to answer your questions or offer assistance.
Food at the hotel was good. We had breakfast included and ate outside every morning. It was a buffet style with plenty of variety. One night we ate in the hotel’s Chinese restaurant. The food here was decent.
The gym was not that well equipped but decent enough. There were only 3 treadmills and 3 exercise bikes and every time I went in these were being used. The free weight section was definitely nothing special. We did enjoy the steam room, sauna and whirlpool facilities.
There are three hotel pool and all brilliant. There are plenty of cabanas but these seemed to go pretty fast. The cabanas have built in fans which were great and needed in humid Bangkok. All 3 pools are next to each other, and high up in the hotel, so overlook Bangkok and the river. The staff by the pool were very attentive.
The location of the hotel is good, right next to the river and not too far from the sites of Bangkok. To get into the city of Bangkok from the hotel you take a short boat ride to the sky train. The sky train is a much cheaper way to travel around Bangkok. Even though taxis and the hotel car service is quite cheap, traffic is just dreadful.
Unfortunately, on our last night I decided to eat some of the street food. The next morning I was violently ill to the point where I just could not move. We were due to be checking out that morning. My partner discussed the situation with the hotel manager and he agreed to let us have a late check-out, at 5.30pm. This meant that we still had enough time to catch our flight. The manager then sent an in-house nurse to our room to look after me and provide some antibiotics. I worsened during the day and we actually had to spend another night at the hotel. The manager had no problem with us spending another night in the room and did not charge us! We could not believe it. And, from then on, all the staff were so attentive and tip-toed around the room so as not to disturb me.
Despite getting ill, our stay at the Peninsula in Bangkok was brilliant. I will not hesitate to go back there again and highly recommend it to anyone going to Bangkok.
