Apostle John’s Basilica.

It is believed that St. John, the writer of the Fourth Gospel and the book of revelation, spent his last years around Ephesus.
John is the son of Zebedee and together with his brother James, began to follow Jesus. John was a close disciple of Jesus and while Christ was on the cross he said to John:’this is Your Mother’ and to Mary Jesus said about John: ‘Mother, this is your Son’.
After Christ Crucifixion and Resurrection, the members of his church were persecuted. John took Jesus mother, Mary, to Ephesus.

The basilica was built in the shape of a cross and six domes. It was constructed of stone and brick and is a rare find amongst architecture of its time. The tomb of St. John was covered marble and laid under the central.
The columns in the courtyard revel the monograms of Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora. A key hole baptistery was in evidenced in the nave. And frescoes representing St. John and Jesus decorate the chapel.
