A Taste of Barbados: A Tour of The Nation of Barbados, Plus a Recipe for Pineapple Pie

This overview of Barbados – the country, the culture, the people, and a recipe, too – was prepared by Iman Henderson while a Business Administration major in the College of Business at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Introduction
Barbados is unlike any other island country in the Caribbean. Barbados is a coral island, pushed out of sea by volcanic activity in a far away time. On the West Coast of Barbados, coral shore beaches of fine white sand stretch along a blue-green sea. The constant breeze of winds gives Barbados a mild and pleasant tropical climate. Geologically Barbados is unique, being actually two land masses that merged together over the years. This and other irregularities make this Caribbean Island quite phenomenal, and there are geological structures that you will find only in Barbados. Barbados is a very beautiful island, with lots of art, activities, night life, music, history and some of the best restaurants to be found anywhere. But what makes Barbados even more special, and the reason why so many visitors keep returning to the island year after year, its locals. Barbadians, called Bajans, are warm and friendly souls, always ready to greet you with a sincere smile. Barbadians make you feel welcome and special, in this lovely Caribbean Island.

- Geographic Facts
Here are some geographic facts about Barbados:
1. Barbados is the most eastern island in the Caribbean island chain. It is pear-shaped and has a high density rate for its population of around 260,000 in an area of only 430 square kilometers. It is one of the few coral-capped islands in the region.
2. The average annual temperature is about 26º C. The tropical climate is suitable for sun-lovers and water sports fanatics as it is not terribly hot although it is bright and sunny. A hurricane may strike the island anytime between June and October.
3. The physical characteristics of Barbados are its lowlands or gently sloping, terraced plains, separated by rolling hills that generally parallel the coasts. Elevations in the interior are ranged from 180 to 240 meters above sea level. Mount Hillaby is the highest point at 340 meters above sea level.
- “Serious” Facts
Here are some serious facts about Barbados:
1. The Capital city of Barbados, Bridgetown, was originally named “Indian Bridge” because of the rude bridge which had been constructed over the river by the Indians. It was later called the “Town of St. Michael” in official documents, before finally being named Bridgetown when a new bridge was built in place of the Indian Bridge, sometime after 1654.
2. November 2006 marks the 40th year of Barbadian independence from Britain. Barbados became independent from the UK on 30th November 1966. Today, it remains a commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as the supposed head of state. Independence celebrations are important there on the island and begin at the end of August!
