This overview of the Dominican Republic – the country, the culture, the people, and a recipe, too – was prepared by Ashley Major while studying marketing in the College of Business at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Introduction
The Dominican Republic is a very fascinating country. The Dominican Republic is full of interesting history, culture, and beauty. In this article I hope to share my findings and adoration for this country. There are many interesting facts I have learned and have provided below along with a signature dish that is a staple in the country.

- Geographic Facts
Here are some geographic facts about Dominican Republic:
1. The Dominican Republic is in the center of the Caribbean basin. This makes it relatively easy to get to Miami, Florida and to Puerto Rico. Miami is a mere two hours away, while Puerto Rico is only 40 minutes away.
2. The Dominican Republic is a part of the island known as Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic is two-thirds of the island, while it shares the remaining part of the island territory with Haiti. The Dominican Republic was once referred to as Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo later became the name of the capital as the country gained independence and became named The Dominican Republic.
3. The Dominican Republic is about twice the size of New Hampshire, and is located in between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. The weather is tropical year round, although the rain season varies throughout the year. The terrain offers mountains, highlands, valleys and beaches. The elevation ranges from 46 below sea level to 3,175 above sea level. Although this island holds so much natural beauty, it is at risk due to being located in the hurricane belt.
4. Because Hispaniola is located in the hurricane belt, there are typically violent storms in the months from June till October. Many people will remember the travesty that struck the neighboring country of Haiti with the 2010 earthquake. On November 13, 2010 a 5.6 earthquake struck about 95 miles southeast of the nation’s capital of Santo Domingo.
