Beautiful Crystal Caves, Bermuda

Crystal Caves in Bermuda looks like a movie set.

Crystal Caves is a subterranean cavern located in Hamilton Parish, Bermuda which is in the northeastern end of the main island not far from Castle Harbor. It is the most famous of the subterranean caverns in Bermuda.

Crystal Caves was discovered in 1904 by two 12 year boys, Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis, while searching for a lost cricket ball. The Wilkinson family owned the land and as soon as they found out about the caves, Percy Wilkinson lowered his fourteen-year-old son Bernard with a bicycle lamp into the cave on 140 feet of strong rope tied to a tree. Today the Wilkinson Family Trust still owns the Crystal Caves and runs guided tours daily.

Crystal Caves is named after the crystal clear water that fills the cave, making it possible to see the cave floor down some 55 feet below the water’s surface. (This is the bottom seen through the water)

The cave is full of stalagmites and stalactites that have taken millions of years to form and sometimes they join to form a single column from floor to ceiling. The cave also has many deep crystal-clear pools which act as reflecting pools when the cave is lit.

Harrington Sound is a large inland body of water in the northeast of the main island of Bermuda.

Most of Harrington Sound’s water flows to and from the Atlantic Ocean via limestone subterranean waterways or caverns and Crystal Caves is the most notable of these.

Crystal Caves and its sister Fantasy Cave are popular tourist attractions today and are connected by a yellow brick road. A pontoon bridge allows hikers and tourists to cross the subterranean pools of crystal clear waters that lie at the floor of the caves. The caves are well lit and often tourists describe them as being like “a movie set”.

What great caves. How cute to join crystal caves with fantasy cave using a yellow brick road. I have not been to these Bermuda caves, but they look much like one I went to in TN. The Tncave ends into a waterfall. When you get there they turn off the lights to show you just how dark it is. You cant see anything at all, but you can feel the rushing air from the waterfall and hear it pounding into the cave wall. Really odd feeling. Sorry to get off subject:) Thank you for showing us these great caves.
