Bolivia’s Breathtaking Views

by Betty Carew on 15/03/09 at 4:15 am

A look at just a small portion of the beauty that can be found in Bolivia.

Bolivia is located in the Altiplano and is one of the most beautiful countries to be found in the world. It is one of the most extensive areas of plateaus in the world. The average height is 11,000 feet. It is also dominated by massive active volcanoes. Come with me to Bolivia and see some of the beauty it holds.

Illimani Mountain and the Milluni Valley

We will start in western Bolivia where you will find the highest mountain in the Cordillera Real, next to La Paz. An hour from downtown La Paz will take you to this beautiful sight where there are llamas, rocks and fascinating lakes. These pictures are taken from the Milluni Valley.

Uyuni Flats

Second is another amazing sight as well as being unique, this is the world’s largest salt flats. It stretches for 4,085 square miles. This is located in southwest Bolivia. Many thousands of years ago it was a part of Lake Minchin which was a large historic lake.

When this large lake dried out, it blessed Bolivia with two lakes, Poopo and Uru Uru Lake. It also left two major salt deserts which are called Salar de Coipasa and the larger one is called Uyuni. The Salar alone is estimated to hold ten billion tons of salt and only 25,000 tons of this salt is removed annually.

The Chacaltaya Mountain

This is a challenging trip which takes about an hour to hike to the top but once you arrive there it is so worth it. This mountain is located near Lake Titicaca and has an elevation of approximately 17,785 feet. This mountain is located about a half hour from La Paz. It is one of the highest glaciers in South America. This glacier is thought to be over 18,000 years old. It is unbelievable that 80% of it has melted since 1987. It is predicted that it will not be there much longer.

Siloli Desert

The Siloli Desert is part of the National Reserve Eduardo Abaroa. It is most famous for its rock formation that is in the shape of trees and is referred to as Stone Tree by some people. These were formed when the Andes started to rise in the beginning.

Bolivia is a place that holds beauty beyond compare. This is just a small part of the spectacular beauty that can be seen in this wonderful country.
