Rio De Janerio to Host The 2016 Olympic Games

Rio de Janerio will host the 2016 Olympic Games. Here are five great things about Rio de Janerio.

Congratulation to Rio de Janerio which has won the right to host the 2016 Olympic Games.  This is the first time that the games have been offered to a city in South America.  Not only are the games offered to a new venue, it reflects the growing economic strength of the Brazilian nation.

The Prime Minoister of Brazil satisfactorily convinced the Olympics Committee that Brazil could finance the games and contain anysecurity or crime related issue.

Rio de Janerio is the second city in Brazil.  It has a population of 6. 2 million. San Paolo has a population of 11 million. Rio de Janerio was the capital of the Portugeuse Empire in the New World and was the capital of Brazil until the capital removed to Brasilia in 1960.

The town is sometimes nicknamed A Cidade Maravilhosa, or “The Marvelous City”.

3. Samba and The Annual Carnival

The Carnival is an annual event which takes place for four days just before lent.

The Sambadome was built in 1984. It is a 700m long pavilion that can house 90,000 revelers. The venue has been used outside of carnival season for a wide range of concerts featuring artists such as The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Robbie Williams and Eric Clapton.

5.  The Maracana Stadium

This is one of the world’s largest football stadiums, and certainly the largest in South America.  It was built for the 1950 World Cup. In 1992 a stand in the stadium collapsed and the stadium was converted into an all seater stadium in the late 1990s.  In 2000 the stadium underwent modifications to increase its capacity to 103,000.  When the stadium reopened in 2007 it had an all seater capacity of 88,992. The stadium will host the world cup in 2014.

Very well-written and good historical information about Rio de Janerio. Never visited but heard it is very nice and from the pictures it looks beautiful. Samba and Caranval event according to a Brazilian friend of mine is a wonderful event. love the rolling stones and Eric Clapton.
