History

Recife’s bridges
Recife was colonized by Portugal in the 1530’s, and was one of the most prosperous colonies with its Sugarcane industry. The Dutch later invaded the city while on war with Spain around the 1600’s, countries such as France and England also colonized the city for some time. Thus the city became one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, with its diversity of people and cultures.
Climate & Region
In a region where the average temperature is 90 degrees, and with its immense stretches of beaches, Recife is a year round destination for all kinds of visitors. Europeans have direct flights from Lisbon through TAP, while Americans have direct flights from Miami via TAM. The old town is surrounded by rivers and is often called the Brazilian Amsterdam, for its resemblance with the Dutch capital.
Folklore
Maracatu

Frevo
Recife was one of the main doors for human trafficking during the slavery period, and slavery was very common at the time, until its prohibition in the end of the 1880’s. Nevertheless, the African root is very strong in the folklore, with dances and music called “Maracatu” and “Frevo”. During the Carnival seasons, Olinda and Recife are one of the top spots for entertainment. The “Galo da Madrugada” is the biggest attraction with over a million people enjoying the carnival festivities.
