Most cities are located in the plains. Some cities are surrounded by bodies of water and /or are located in coastal areas or by the bay.

1. Male, Maldives

The beautiful island of Male City is the capital of the Maldives, a country consisting of many islands located in the Atlantic Ocean. Male is the largest city of Maldives with a population of more than 10,000 people. The city was also called Mahal and traditionally was the King’s Island.

The magnificent city of Manama, the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with pleasant waterfront is located in the northeast corner of Bahrain. It has a population of about 155,000 people. Manama will be the site of the proposed Murjan Tower which would be over 1 km (3,281 ft) tall and will be taller than the Burj Dubai.

It has an estimated population of 2.1 million. This beautiful city which is located on a peninsula was listed as one of the top ten liveliest cities in the world for 2009. The city has been continuously inhabited since 15th century BCE.

In the US, it is the most densely populated city and one of the most populous urban areas in the world. Even after the 911incidents, New York is still one of the most popular city tourist destinations in the world.

7. Rio de Janeiro

One of the best cities in South America is Rio de Janeiro or River of January. Also known as ‘The Marvelous City’, it is the second largest city of Brazil and the 3rd largest in South America. Rio de Janeiro was the former capital of Brazil.

This attractive city by the Bay of English is one of the most livable cities in the world for more than a decade and the favorite destination for many international conferences and events.

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is located on the eastern shores of Manila Bay.  Manila has more than 100 parks making it one of the most visited places in the country. Some of its famous parks include Rizal Park, Botanical Garden, Manila Zoo, Ocean Park and many others. It is known for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills and its most famous landmark – the Golden Gate Bridge.
