Aguascalientes is in the center of Mexico. The name “aguascalientes” is derived from the Spanish name for “hot” (caliente), and “waters” (aguas). This is because of the abundance of hot springs in the area. Aguascalientes is about 300 miles from Mexico City. The state is not heavily populated although the area near the capital is where mostly all the citizens live.
The state was created in 1835 when it was seperated from
Zacatecas. It bears the name Aguascalientes taken from its largest city and capital.
This state from Mexico originated from early colonial Spanish times. It is now making itself heard by becoming a major industry. The city was, at a time, a major silver miner, and a major source of railroad transportation, this because of its location in the very center of Mexico, between the three most populated areas, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
In the rural part of the country, Aguascalientes was the 1st national producer of grapes and wine. The tradition of making wine ceased gradually because Mexican culture doesn’t have strong roots in the making of wine. Only a few wineries remain, mainly for the Church’s demand for wine to be consumed in small portions during Mass. From that period, Aguascalientes moved on industrialism, which proved successful. Nowadays it relays in industrial power, although it also goes for tourism since the capital city has gained prestige and status as a national representation of beauty and cleanliness. The haciendas and baths hold historic and recreational importance.
Aguascalientes at first was not a major tourist center, it is well prestiged as a tourist center, but most international visitors usually come for the San Marcos Fair. Nowadays, the capital city has gained the reputation as a good place to enjoy the center’s historic buildings, as well as its modernity in the outskirts of town. The city has many conventions each year. It is a great place of relaxation because how clean and safe it is. It is a major tourist attraction, although some tourists prefer exploring the mining towns to north, in the municipalities of Asientos and Tepezalá, which are almost ghost towns nowadays. The haciendas, baths, and hotsprings around the state are also a center of tourism. The municipality of Calvillo has a semi tropical climate. It is the part of the state with the most greenery and was the first producer of guava in Mexico. It is a popular place for watersports.
The state has a Natural Protected Reserve in the higher parts of the mountains called Sierra Fria. It is located about 2,500 to 3,000 meters above sea level. It is made up of pine and oak forests, and is mostly observed for the wide ravines, in which pumas, raccoons, wild turkey, lynxes, boar, white-tailed deer, and many other animals live in. there are steep cycling paths, picnic and camping areas, as well as hunting clubs. The mountain climate and animals and plants attract many campers. In winter, the temperature can drop to -5°C.
Usually, this is the only part of the state that receives snow.
Presently, the state has a football team, the “Nexaca”, a baseball team, “Los Raileros”, and a basketball team, “Las Panteras”.
Aguascalientes is divided into 11 municipalities.
