Cape Town has been coined one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With the mountain and the sea, it is no surprise. It is a tourist’s paradise as it maintains that African feel, but still has international appeal.
Robben Island is a world heritage site. It was home to former South African president, Nelson Mandela and many other freedom fighters during the apartheid era. Visiting the prison, one is able to view Mandela actual cell. It offers an unforgettable experience into the lives of the people who tried to fight against apartheid rulers. Daily ferry tours are offered.
The cable car on Table Mountain offers a bird’s eye view of the city. One can also get lost in the spectacular sunsets from the top of the mountain. There is a restaurant there as well to enjoy a light meal or to have sundowners on a perfect summer’s evening.
Kirstenbosch Gardens is a must-see when visiting Cape Town. It has 36 hectares of cultivated garden. All flora is indigenous to South Africa. It showcases proteas, cycads and fynbos. It also has ponds, streams and pathways for visitors to enjoy a quite walk around the garden.
Cape Point is where the cold current on the West coast and the warm current on the East coast merge. It is the most southern tip of Africa. Cape Point is within the Cape Peninsula National Park. There are 250 species of birds, Cape Mountain zebras, bucks and baboons. There is also indigenous flora that is found nowhere else in the world. One can take a scenic drive, relax at one of the many picnic spots or merely travel to the Lighthouse lookout to enjoy the beautiful views.
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is a shopper’s paradise with 250 shops to cater for everyone’s tastes. There are world-class restaurants there as well as fabulous coffee shops. The Waterfront also boasts a host of activities. The Two Oceans Aquarium is a major attraction for children. The South African Maritum Museum has interactive displays and the history of local shipwrecks. The new Nelson Mandela Gateway in the Clock Tower displays historical and educational material relating to Robben Island. There are also harbour cruises and sundowner cruises that depart from the Waterfront.
Whether you are a wine-lover or not, visiting one of the Cape winelands is a definite must. They are situated among spectacular scenery with the mountain as a backdrop. The winelands are divided into different regions each offering their own ‘wine route.’ The most popular are Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Paarl and Constantia Valley. Dutch homesteads and award-winning wine farms which offer the country’s best wines is what one can expect at these winelands.
Cape Town also has wonderful beaches. Camps Bay is very popular. The nightlife in Cape Town is always a buzz. Green Point boasts various clubs and bars.
