This is Part Two of the series "Dialectic sayings of Trinidad and Tobago."

In case you missed the first in the series see: http://trifter.com/caribbean-latin-america/ten-dialectic-sayings-of-trinidad-and-tobago/ Here are more slang expressions from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.

(1)   “Never see come see”

Some people always react to a scene as if they never saw something before. They like to mind other people’s business.

(2)   “She rel macotious/ macocious” or  “She rel farse.”

This is similar to the first saying. This is said when a person is quick to mind another person’s business. They are called “farse” or “macocious.”

(3)   “Seepaul luck is not Gopaul luck”

One person’s fortune may not be someone else’s fortune.

(4)   “Yuh go put fowl to watch corn?”

Do not ask a thief to watch your possessions.

(5)   “Oh laud fadda put ah han.”

This is a cry for God the Father to help out by putting His hand into the fray.

(6)   “Ah rel ketchin mih tail yes” or “Ah ketchin mih nenen oui” or “Ah ketchin mih royal.”

This is said when you are going through a reall tough situation.

(7)   “After one time is two time.”

This is usually used by the old to say that what they used to do when they were young they cannot do now as they are getting older. It is almost similar to the expression “Once a man twice a child.”

(8)   “Yuh have to read and spell fuh them too.”

Sometimes people are not able to understand what you are saying unless you go the extra mile and give extra details – details you feel an educated person should not need you to tell them. It is like you are reading and spelling for them.

(9)   “Friends does carry yuh away but dey doh bring yuh back.”

Do not be so quick to go with friends. Often they get you in trouble and they leave you. You may not return alive.

(10)  “One hand doh clap.”

Unless you cooperate you will not get things done. Two hands are needed for clapping.

Good information. I heard Trinidad and Tobago only in TV and books. It’s probably a great country.
