My Life on the Island

St. Maarten is wonderful this time of the year, especially for a honeymoon.

My wife and I had the opportunity to spend our honeymoon on the island of St. Maartens last month. It was truly wonderful. From the resort we had located on Simpson Bay with a view of the ocean to the bartender that kept us loaded with rum punch, it was truly awesome. We had arrived on the island on Saturday May 16th and checked into our suite. It was a 2 bedroom overlooking the bay, with a wonderful view of the Carribean Ocean beyond. Those aqua colored waters looked great. After checking in  and getting our things to our room, we headed down the pool where there was a swim-up bar. It was happy hour and the bartender was very lively and entertaining. We told her we were there on our honeymoon and she made us a rum punch. She said it was the most popular drink on the island. And I do have to say it was really good. We later went walking along the street in front of the resort checking out the local shops and just getting a feel of the area. We had dinner that evening at a little roadside restaurant across from our resort callled Lee’s Roadside Grill. They had the best barbeque ribs I had eaten! Then it started raining and we got soaked as we ran across the street to get to our room.

Sunday was a relaxing day and we just walked around town again checking out some of the local stores in the immediate area. On Monday, we had registered for a sunset boat cruise for the evening so during the day we decided to go horseback riding. We took a cab from the resort to the stable. Upon entering the location of the stable we were truly taken aback! It was just some out of the way place with two blue steel trailers. There was a power plant right there and they were doing construction and the whole place just looked run down. But it turned out to be a fun experience as our guide,  Danny, got us on our horses and took us out on the trail. We rode around for about an hour and he was a great tour guide with loads of local lore. As we were heading back to the stables he asked if we wanted to go swimming on horseback. Of course we all said yes. It was great until my horse decided it was time to relieve himself.

Later that evening, we went on our boat tour aboard a catamarand named the “Fandango”. That was awesome! I got to help the crew along with some other guests to raise the sails!. We sailed around the coast of the island and saw some wonderful scenery. And of course they were serving free drinks on board. Rum Punch was floating all around. That evening my wife and I walked back along the street in front of our resort to a little restaurant that specialized in pasta. Needless to say that neither of us are big seafood eaters, so we mostly ate regular fare. She ordered Fettucini Alfredo and I had the Lasagna.

Later I will finish out the rest of the week. Come back to hear about Tuesday when we rented a car to go sight-seeing on our own. That was a hoot!!!
