Review of Foxys Bar & Restaurant at Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, in the beautiful British Virgin Islands.

I recently went back to Foxys on Jost van Dyke in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Foxy is famous for his New year’s Eve parties and it’s one of the top three locations in the world to be at for New Year’s Eve.
I was there for Foxys Wooden Boat Regatta, held annually each year at Memorial Day Weekend. This was his 35 year for hosting the races!
I sat down and talked to Foxy for about an hour. Whoever said Lady Di was the most photographed person in the world, has apparently never met Foxy. While he is renown for his original songs and jokes, his famous parties held throughout the year, keeps the crowds coming back. In the hour we chatted, sitting in chairs facing the beach, he was photographed 41 times! And this was BEFORE lunch! He was always affable and good natured at the constant interruptions and picture taking. He is truly laid back, island style.
The bartender was someone I hadn’t seen in awhile, and he was a real sweet heart and refused payment on my first drink. What a gentleman! Few bars in the BVI ever give out free drinks to long standing customers, so I was duly impressed that Foxys has kept up this custom over the years. I guess I have been going to Foxys off and on for about 25 years. I’ve watched the place grow up from a Rum shack on the beach, with no electricity on the island at all, to an open air restaurant that can serve up-wards of 1,200 people at a time if need be.
Later on we had lunch at Foxys and though the menu is shorter than I recall in year’s past, it was excellent food. I had the quintessential burger and fries while my friends had the fish sandwich and fries. The food came rather fast by island terms. The waitress brought us plenty of condiments. The half pound burger was more than generous, thoughtfully placed on a nice sesame seed bun. Our waitress was pleasant and kept us in drinks, so all in all, the food and service was great.
An entertainer, I didn’t catch him name, played music throughout our lunchtime. There is always live music at Foxys, another big attraction besides Foxy himself.
I toured their gift shop and it had well chosen items, loads of souvenir clothing as well as nice island clothing in case you felt the need to add to your traveling wardrobe. Lots of accessories and kid stuff was around too and the shop was doing a brisk business.
The restrooms, were clean and functional with the typical pleas not to waste water (only flush if you must!) I give Foxys a BIG TEN and ever you are in the British Virgin Islands (about 60 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico) you must definitely go to Foxys bar and restaurant for a good time.
