The article describes the Community Desinić (Croatia) and the most popular historical legend connected to the place of Desinić-legend about Veronika Desinićka.
Community Desinić is a territory with very dynamic past. It is situated in Croatia, or more precisely, in the west part of Krapinsko-zagorska county, near state border with Republic of Slovenia. Area of 45,04 km2 is characterized by hilly landscape, preserved nature and great touristic potential, considering it’s natural, cultural and historical resources.
It is not on the main traffic corridor but is near them. For example, we can mention a very strong traffic corridor E-59 Zagreb-Macelj or railway Zagreb-Krapina-Đurmanec-Republic of Slovenia.
There is also traffic connection with Krapina, administrative center of Krapinsko-zagorska county, and all other cities and communities in it.
High up on the hill above Desinić, central place of the Community Desinić with, proudly stands Veliki Tabor, one of the most beautiful medieval castles in Croatia.
Legend says it was a place of cruel finalization of tragic love between young peasant-woman Veronika Desinička and count Friedrich Celjski by his father count Herman Celjski.
In the fifteenth century Veronika Desinićka, young peasant woman lived in the village of Desinić, the lands of count Herman Celjski. One day , while riding through his father’s possessions Friedrich Celjski (son of count Herman Celjski) met Veronika Desinićka and they fall in love. Herman Celjski didn’t like this, so they decided to run away to city of Fridrichstein in Slovenia in the country house that Herman Celjski built for his son Friedrich. When Herman found out about their escape he sent the army to Fridrichstein with the order to catch them. Veronika and Friedrich were trying to escape from Herman’s army through Gorski kotar, Moslavina, Pokuplje and Kalnik but in the end they were caught. Friedrich was taken to Celje and captured in a high tower there and Veronika was taken to Veliki Tabor, captured there and charged as a witch. Although the jury find Veronika not guilty Herman ordered that she has to be strangled.
After she was strangled, her dead body was walled up in wall of tower.
This tragic story has become a synonym for this place in perception of everyone who visited it or just heard about it.
Today, this beautiful and sincere love story is, unfortunately, still not used enough as base for development of historical tourism, waiting for someone willing to present the spirit of past in presence, show richness of historical events in this area as touristic attractions and save it from danger of being forgotten.
Only one historical novel from the end of 19nth century and folklore ballet with singing in recent times used this story as theme. So, the moment has come for it to be presented to the world as it deserves much more than some other popular legends.
