Wander around Old Town, Dubrovnik.

The city of Dubrovnik was built in the Middle Ages and became the only city in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Dubrovnik was an independent and merchant city for over 700 years; it was abolished in 1806 by Napoleon.

Dubrovnik was the center for Croatian literature, language, poets, painters, mathematicians, scholars and other notables.

Today, Dubrovnik is a proud Adriatic jewel in Croatia’s crown.

George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this beautiful city, about which he said “those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and see Dubrovnik”, as well as, famously, describing it as “the pearl of the Adriatic”. Dubrovnik truly is a stunning city with its amazing Old Town.

Dubrovnik sports amazing architecture, stunning churches and monasteries and beautiful structures and the best way to see it all is a walk along the walls.

One of the first sights is the Pile Gate.  This western gate is the traditional entrance to the Old Town.  Look up as you walk through and you will see Dubrovnik’s patron saint, St. Blaise.

As you walk through the Pile Gate you will see the Stradun, which runs from the Pile Gate to the Ploce Gate.

You can’t help seeing the Onofrio Fountain when you walk through Pile Gate. Onofrio Fountain is a famous landmark in the Old Town.  It was built in 1438 as part of the town’s water supply system.

The Bell Tower.

The Rector’s Palace was built in the 15th century and is now being used is a variety of ways. Now it houses the city archives and the Summer Festival.

It also houses an interesting exhibition named “Memorial Room of hte Dibrovnik Defenders”.  It is a memorial for the Dubrovnik citizens who were killed in the war between 1991 and 1995.

The Cathedral was rebuilt in the 18th century after an earthquake destroyed the original. Excavations are still going on, revealing layers of an older building.  Don’t miss the Treasury or the Madonna.

Fort Lovrijenac is located outside the west walls.  It was built for defense against enemies approaching from the west.  It is now used for summer plays.
