Unspoilt nature, midnight sun, home of Santa Claus and the “Aurora Borealis”, also called the northern lights, all make Finnish Lapland unique.

In the wintry silence of snowy frozen fells, you can sense the sublime peace and quiet of unspoilt nature. Here, you find the urge to be still and commune with mother earth or the cosmos irresistible. A population density of 2 persons per square km., allows you to experience the serenity of nature like nowhere else on the planet.

In Finnish Lapland, you can meet Lapland’s most famous inhabitant, Santa Claus or “Joulupukki” in Finnish, as you go on a husky sled excursion in places like Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. Sporty visitors can go skiing or slaloming on the many top-quality winter resorts like Salla or Ounasvaara.

Skiing daredevils can experience almost flying at the Black World Cup piste 52% final slope at Levi resort.

Adventurous visitors can spend a night in a frozen igloo or an ice-hotel.

A different kind of sport is to go for “Pilkki” or ice-fishing by digging a hole in the metre thick ice on a frozen lake and waiting for the fish to bite.

The biggest snow castle in the world with towers even 20 metres high, made anew every year, often houses weddings in the town of Kemi.

Midnight Sun in the Summer

Experiencing the midnight sun in Finland is unforgettable. In northern Finland, the sun does not set for several weeks in a row. In Utsjoki, a single, long summer day lasts for two and a half months. The whole country wakes up to a celebration of different festivals everywhere, attracting thousands of international visitors.

Sounds great, very much like Alaska. Everything you described about Lapland pretty much describes Alaska, especially the father north you travel in Alaska. .

I would love to visit Lapland, although when I think of Lapland I think of it with wandering nomads, skin tents and herds of reindeer. All because I read so much about Lapland when I was a child and that’s the way it was pictured then.

I would love to visit Lapland, although I think of it as a snow covered landscape, with skin tents sheltering nomad herdsmen, traveling with herds of reindeer. I was facinated with stories of Lapland when I was a child and that picture has remained in my head.
