Five Best Holiday Destinations: European Edition

by Greyian Storm on 11/08/09 at 9:29 am

A European-themed follow-up to the massively successful “Five Best Holiday Destinations”.

My most successful article of all time is undoubtedly my Five Best Holiday Destinations article. It has received more than 17000 views. This translates to 29 views per day. Considering the article is over 18 months old, it clearly has some legs. In October 2008, I wrote the first sequel to that article, entitled Five Best Holiday Destinations: USA Edition. This article hasn’t been anywhere near as successful as its predecessor, but it has still exceeded 1000 views. With any luck, both of these articles will continue to receive views. For a long time now, I’ve wanted to write another of these articles. Unfortunately, every time I sat down to write, ideas for the article title seemed to run away from me. Even now I’m slightly perplexed. I can not figure out how it took me 9 whole months just to come up with a European-themed version of these previously written articles. It’s hardly a stretch and it is far from a new discovery. Happily enough though, I’m now ready to tell you, my readers, my five favourite holiday destinations in Europe.

1. Malta

Seeing as Malta placed second in my original article (behind The Maldives), it was always likely to be in this article too, most likely in first place. Unsurprisingly, it is. Malta is a wonderful little island. It isn’t great for a long holiday, but it is lovely for a short stay, especially the town of St. Julians near Valletta. The scenery is beautiful, the people are wonderful and the weather is lovely all the time. A very relaxing and enjoyable holiday destination.

2. Germany

This might seem like an odd choice for second place in a European travel article. Many people believe that German people are quite stern, serious and efficient. They are also notorious for having absolutely no sense of humour. This, however, is a misconception. Many Germans are actually hilarious (especially when they have been drinking). This is most evident in smaller towns and villages in the south of the country, particularly in Bavaria. There is also a lot of historical monuments to visit in Germany and a variety of different types of people to meet. In many ways, the people in the north and the south almost seem like citizens of different countries.

3. Croatia

Another destination mentioned in my original article, Croatia is a beautiful country to visit. Although the weather isn’t always perfect, the country is lovely. The landscape is absolutely gorgeous, especially the mountain areas. The people are very nice, the scuba diving is great (except the water gets very cold at depths exceeding 10 metres). Mind you, I did learn to scuba dive (and have done most of my dives) in The Maldives, which is undoubtedly a lot warmer than average. Dubrovnik is lovely, especially the old city, and is a must see if you are in the area.

4. Russia

Yet another country that featured in my original article. Interestingly enough, I also have a friend from Russia, but that probably isn’t actually all that interesting to you. Although Russia mightn’t be everyone’s favourite country, it is definitely somewhere than everyone should visit, especially in the Winter. Russia has a vivid history, that is clearly visible from Russian cities and monuments. Just make sure you don’t get buried in the fierce Winter snows.

5. Ireland

I actually found myself struggling to come up with a fifth entry for this article. I considered Paris, Milan, Rome and Madrid, but frankly those cities aren’t of much interest to me. Why? Well, I’m a young male, so they just aren’t that appealing. I also considered Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki, but I have never actually been to any of those countries, so writing about them would be hard. Then it came to me. Why not write about where I live? For some odd reason, a lot of people (particularly Americans) seem to love Ireland. I really, really do not understand it, but they do. Sure, we’ve got lovely green fields and the Cliffs of Moher. We are supposedly a very welcoming people (I scoff at that though) and we’re very outgoing and enthusiastic (that is probably because of the alcohol though). I’ll never personally understand why people love Ireland though. Maybe I just need to move away for a while, to see what I’m missing. If I ever find myself loving this country, I’ll let you know.

Home is so easy to overlook. I’ve just spent a couple of weeks in Co Mayo and feel that I’d be content never to stray abroad again. I will of course, when the memory fades. Good article.

Nice summary of your best 5 places in Europe. I agree with all five of your choices. I agree with you also in that Germany has a lot to offer: not just a spectacular city like Berlin but also very romantic scenery like the Rhine valley, the Bavarian Forest, etc.
