How to Have the Perfect Family Holiday in France

What do you need? Plane or ferry? Where to go? When to go? What to buy? What to bring? And so much more questions answered in this article.

When most people think about where to go in France, they think the hottest place. But I say no. The best place to stay is in the west of France. Why?. If you go south, it’s going to be to hot, what I mean by that is you will have no energy, you’ll be sticky, in a mood, to tired to go anywhere and lose out on a lot . The west of France has everything the south has. The west has the most loveliest weather changes. It can be overcast in the morning and by noon the sky is completely clear. You can relax in the sun and enjoy your holiday. It is true, good weather puts everyone in a good mood. But where abouts is the best place to stay in the west? The best family or any other France holiday is in St Jean de Monts. I recommend staying in a caravan. It is not as bad as it sounds. if you rent a caravan, your whole family will be brought closer, but no will be any ones hair, guarantee! If you follow me and tuse St Jean De Monts, I recommend going with one of sun marinas caravan and camping locations. To book a caravan I recommend Quest En France holidays.

One of the most asked questions is “Plane or Ferry?” For a family Holiday I recommend the Ferry. It is a longer trip then the plane, but has many benefits. It is stress free, you just roll on then roll of, much easier! It costs a similar price to a plane trip if you include car rental. here’s some tips for the ferry!

  • Bring food onto the boat.
  • Have everyone assigned and holding needed supplies for the boat journey. (toys, food and drink etc.)
  • if you book a room on an over night stay the ferry will provide towels soaps and other toiletries.
  • If your on an overnight crossing bring your own paper cups, bowls and mini cereals as ferry prices are extremely expensive.
  • Don’t be fooled by the fancy looking restaurants, the best thing to get for dinner is a couple of chips or if no ones hungry; bring some tea, coffee or soft drinks to your cabin or chosen seats.
  • If renting a cabin, pay the extra 40 or 50 pounds for the window cabin. they provide natural light, the room feels much bigger, windows helps prevent sea sickness as you can see as well as feel the movement; if your in a no window room you feel but not see the movement and your mind is presented with a problem. Window rooms are located at the best part of the ship, near the car deck and near important places on the ferry. i.e. no long stair ways.
  • Enjoy your trip, go up on deck, explore the ferry, and most important relax and get in the holiday mood before the holiday.

Where to go?

There is plenty of places to go and see. if your following me and going to st Jean De Monts, you are close to the beach, you can enjoy the campsite pool, go into the local Bazaar, where you can enjoy great deals and buy unusual products you can’t find anywhere else. Take a thirty minute drive to Noirmoutier en l’lle. There is a bridge to the island and it has the best Aquarium, DO NOT be fooled by any other, this is the best. It also has a water park, but the local St Jean de Monts water toboggan is better. Noirmoutier en l’lle has a lovely little bazaar and potter who makes the best little pottery’s! I don’t recommend the castle on Noirmoutier en l’lle but try to come when there’s a market on.

How much to buy for the children? I recommend giving them the money before hand. (i.e. 20 pounds a week over three weeks or 30 a week over two weeks or 60 for a one week holiday. For younger children (under 10) you pay, but constantly remind the that they only have a certain amount left etc.

What to bring to France?

  • Lots of towels
  • Crisps(if you like crisps. French crisps are horrible!)
  • Extra space in the car or an extra suitcase.
  • Laptop or portable dvd player.
  • Socket adapter
  • Dictionary
  • Music
  • Lots of books
  • Hats and flip-flops (or sandals)
  • Two mobile phones
  • DVD’s
  • CD player
  • Umberella
  • Toys for the children + children story books
  • Puzzles
  • Clock

Don’t worry about the food. Food and ine is extremly good value in France. e.g. 6×2L water 67c, Wine worth 20 Euro in Ireland or England 5 Euro in France

Good advice. The thought of hanging round airports with kids is just so daunting. Of course we Irish have to pay extra to get to France or anywhere by sea. Still, it’s worth it.

Hi thanks for your feedback. Your right, it’s worth it. Triond.com lost me! I can’t log in. when I clicked my user name it said it does not exist. I just clicked yours and it said the same!

Hi, some people were asking how much the Noirmoutier crossing price is? Answer: You don’t have to cross by boat there is a bridge.
