Lovely Givry in Burgundy

by Francois Hagnere on 16/06/10 at 3:44 am

Who never dreamt of living in a town with superb edifices in the countryside? There we go, in Burgundy.

Givry is a real little town in the countryside. Here the quality of architecture is exceptional as much for houses or public edifices and the church is quite remarkable.  It was achieved in 1791, during the French Revolution and certainly is the most curious of the region with its pyramid-shaped spire overlooking an octagon covered with a vast dome. Emiland  Gauthey (1732-1806) was the architect of this most original edifice. This talented engineer and architect of the XVIIIth century namely designed the “Canal du Centre”  between Digoin and Chalon-sur-Saône in 1783-84. He also built the churches of Barizey (1778) which he used as a model for Givry, of Saint-Germain du Plain (1778), the town hall of Tournus (1771) and the theater of Chalon (1788). The fountain with dolphins ,”Fontaine aux Dauphins”, dates back to 1776 and is the work of Emiland Gauthey and Thomas Dumorey.

The town hall of Givry (1759-71) is housed in a former XVIIIth century gate in the ramparts. It is crowned with a pinnacle turret presenting colourful glazed tiles so typical of Burgundy. Another edifice is well worth the visit: the “Halles aux Blés”, a circular grain market (1825-1830). This rare construction is now used for cultural events. Givry knows how to welcome visitors with exhibitions of paintings and sculptures and also with its famous Burgundy wine, King Henri IV’s favourite. There is even a Wine Brotherhood here that organizes  banquets. What an excellent opportunity to taste the famous “poule au pot”.   See you soon in Burgundy!

Great work Francois and lovely to see you publishing on here again, this place reminded me of some of the little towns and villages here in county Durham, we live near a place called Barnard castle, you should look it up online, its fantastic and boasts a very old ruined castle and fort, it stands built into a cliff side, truly remarkable, loved this feature mate,

very best wishes always, Aaron x

Wonderful discussion Francois. I didn’t know about this place. I especially like the Halles aux Blés. Reminds me of a market hall in Newcastle by John Dobson. I get the Barnard Castle reference too.

Another great write Francois and really awesome photos. Maybe one day I’ll make it to France and enjoy the exquisite elegance of your beautiful country. You possess a very deep knowledge of French history that is quite fascinating. Us Americans only have a few hundred years of history as France has several thousands of years. You’re a talented writer Francois. Great work my friend!

I really enjoyed reading this article and seeing the photos. My family stayed in Givry in 1986. We were on our way to the South of France and found Givry just by chance.

It was a very memorable stay. I loved the village, food and especially the wine.

I hope to return one day.
