If you think you’ve seen and done everything in Munich then try visiting the Munich film studios for a fun day trip from Munich for all the family.

is an interesting half day outing and gets you off of the usual Munich tourist route. The studio is also well suited for kids and families and not hard to reach.

The Bavarian Film Studio

Attractions

There is an action packed stunt show that runs at 12:00, 13:00 and 15:00 on various days, unfortunately the days and hours vary and the only schedule on line is in German.

During the high season there is an English speaking tour at 13:00 each day. I was there in the off season and they had no problem showing a few English speakers around in English. I can imagine that the tour would be just as interesting even in German as there is plenty to see.

Of interest

Many well known films and T.V. series have been filmed here, among them Never ending story, Das Boot, The great Escape and Willy Wonka.

The tour

You begin with a quick ride on a mini-tour train around the studio grounds, and you see the street they use to film Western films. Then you are shown inside some of the large empty sound stages. After that you are taken on to one of the sound stages and the tourists act our scenes from a famous German series, while being filmed and using various scenery, sound effects and props.

Then you move on to see the sets of some famous films, and the flying dog from Never Ending Story, where some lucky kids can sit on the dog while it “flies” and they are filmed against a green screen, while the theme song plays in the background.

On to the next stop and the submarine which was used in the filming of Das Boot. The tour group gets to walk through the submarine that was used in the film. The group then watches the “film” they have produced, and see where the control panels are and where editing takes place.

All in all an action packed and unexpected Munich tourist attraction.

The studio is south of Munich in the district of Grunwald in the suburb of Geiselgasteig.

Take tram line 25 from the city center to grunwald and exit at Bavariafilmplatz. From there it is a short walk down one tree lined suburban lane towards the studio entrance.

By car go via Grunwalder Street to Grunwald/Bad Tolz, once you reach Grunwald-Geiselgasteig you will see signs to “Bavaria Filmstadt” on your left.
