Photo Essay: Wuppertal Floating Train

by stine1 on 17/09/11 at 9:20 am

The floating train in Wuppertal (Germany) is one of very few floating trains world wide.

The floating train in Wuppertal (Germany) is called “Schwebebahn”. It was built at the beginning of the 20. century and is still operated as part of the public transportation. We have been there in August 2011 and I would like to share some of our photos of this sky train.

Here you can see track along or rather over the river Wupper, which also gave the name to the German city Wuppertal. Wuppertal does literally mean “Wupper Valley”.

On this photo you can see the train hanging under the track. So this is not comparable to monorail trains or any other way of transportation by train.

Here you see one train arriving in a train station.

Another pretty colourful train in a station.

Here you can see how the trains are attached to the track.

The trains all have a different design as they are mainly printed with advertising.

This is one end of the track. As there is only one track, the trains have to change sides on both ends.

This photos shows a switch for the trains.

I hope this little photo essay was interesting for you. It is not only boring technology, I can absolutely recommend it to tourists who want to attend a fun ride :-)

We would need such a train here, as there would never be any accidents with reindeers and other animals being hit by trains!
Thank you for the interesting pictures and article!! :)
