Greece is located in southwestern Europe between Albania, Turkey, and Italy. Egypt is situated directly south of its southern-most island, Crete. Although, it is one of the smallest countries in Europe, Greece is rich in history and culture.
Tourist love to visit Greece, not only for it’s beauty and culture, but for the hospitality and safety. Life in Greece is simple, the locals are very charming, and they love having guests in their country. You will never feel lonely in Greece, even if you are traveling alone. If a Greek perceives that you are alone, they will invite you to join their friends and family.
Tourist generally feel safe in Greece due to the incredibly low crime rate. Although, common sense should be exercised, especially by women traveling alone after dark in the larger cities.
You will want to visit the site of the great volcano, Sanatorium. When a volcano erupted on the island hundreds of years ago, the people of a small village there were quickly covered in molten lava. The entire village remains frozen in time.
Santorini is a beautiful island often featured in paintings because of its beautiful white washed buildings topped with classic blue rooftops. It is located in the islands group called the Cyclades. From Santorini it is possible to island hop via a number of small passenger boats that shuttle between a number of different islands, each with its own unique history and features. Some people believe that Santorini is the original site of the legendary Atlantis.
Crete an island, rich in history lies between two seas. This location has some the most beautiful beaches, breathtaking scenery, on earth. Crete is likely the most popular island in Greece. Visitors can leisurely explore the ancient sites, such as the Palace of King Minos at the ancient port city of Knossos and swim in the crystal clear waters. The cuisine and the nightlife with the locals will add to your experience on the island. Knossos is also an excellent place to buy silver jewelry and other souvenirs.
Athens, one of the most magnificent cities in the world is also the capital city of Greece.
The Parthenon, the Herod Atticus Odeon, the Athens Acropolis Hill and the Erechtheion, are awe inspiring sites which makes Athens one of the most visited cities in the world. It is easy to navigate via the modern subway system and there is an abundance of taxi cabs that can be hired relatively inexpensively.
The Monastiraki Bazaar, and the Plaka Quarters in the downtown areas of Athens is definitely an area you will want to visit. You will be impressed at with how beautifully the modern and ancient features complement each other. Greece is the land of many firsts, therefore, it isn’t surprising that they were the first to create pizza. Greek pizza is unlike any other. Fresh fruits and vegetables from the region are among the highest quality of any in Europe. You’ll certainly want to take advantage of the many opportunities to dine and relax al fresco in the many cafes. Greek men are fond of their cafes and you will find many opportunities to engage in interesting conversations with the locals.
Be aware of your surroundings and always have your camera ready. One of the most remarkable things about Greece is the unity of architecture and ruins from many different time periods. It is not unusual to see samples from the classical Greek period and the medieval period in one place.
Get out on your own and explore the many caves on the islands, linger on the beautiful beaches, and mingle with the friendly villagers. The Greeks are naturally friendly and fun-loving people. If you visit Greece, you are sure to have a memorable vacation.
