Vacation in Meteora, Greece

Meteora, Greece looks like a place from a different planet. Strange and very tall rock formations dominate the landscape. It all seems like a land of giants. Literary translated into English, Meteora means “suspended in the air.” No doubt that this is a perfect name. During your vacation in Meteora, you will see the incredible landscape and most extraordinary medieval monasteries that top some of the rock formations. It’s truly a breathtaking landscape.

Rock formations can be seen from a distance. They are situated in the middle of the flat landscape, so once you see it, you can’t believe it. It’s no wonder if you think that your eyes are deceiving you. How was it possible for medieval monks to build those stunning buildings on top of those rocks? This is the first surprise that you will come upon during your vacation in Meteora.

These monasteries were built during 14th century. Back then the Greece fell into the hands of Ottoman Turks. Back then many monks were seeking refuge at the top of these strange rocks. There they decided to build monasteries so that they can defend themselves from the Turks. And when you see all that during your vacation in Meteora, you can actually imagine how things were several hundred years ago. It’s like the time in Meteora has stopped.

When these monasteries were originally designed, the only way to reach them was with ropes. But, don’t worry. During your vacation in Meteora, you will be able to reach the monasteries via bridges and steps hewn out of rocks. It’s all very well fitted into the existing structures.

Meteora has over one million visitors each year. That’s truly a breathtaking number. But, as monks say, the number of tourists that come to visit Meteora during their vacation increases every year. This is no wonder, because Meteora is a unique place, like no other in the world. Eifel Tower is a great example of engineering, but it’s nothing compare to the Meteora in Greece.

During weekends Greeks also like to visit their national heritage. So, if you decide to visit Meteora during Saturday or Sunday, you will find yourselves surrounded with many Greeks. They are all very friendly, but also very noisy. It’s just a part of their national identity to be loud. One thing is for sure, Greeks are great hosts. You will be satisfied with the way they treat you during your vacation in Meteora.

It’s very important to say that you can’t expect to visit all of the Meteora monasteries in one day. There are so many of them and they are all unique. Once you reach one of them, it will be hard for you to leave.

The largest and most beautiful of all monasteries is the Metamorphosis (Moni Megalou Meteorou). Metamorphosis is something you must visit during your vacation in Meteora. It’s located at the height of 2,000 feet and it provides a breathtaking view.

Meteora is definitely a surreal place.

Enjoy your vacation in Meteora.
