Iceland’s Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland, a day trip to the Blue Lagoon is a must.
On the Reykjanes Peninsula in Grindavik, Iceland the Blue Lagoon spa is situated on top of a lava field. The neighboring Svartsengi geothermal power plant feeds the water to the spa heated to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (or 40 degrees Celsius).

The water is loaded with minerals, which is not only good for your skin, it is an acceptable treatment for psoriasis. Before entering the lagoon you can opt to take a bucket of of the silica and sulfur rich mud to lather up with.

The weirdest thing about the Blue Lagoon to foreign visitors- although perfectly natural to Icelanders- is the communal shower facilities. Yes, everyone gets naked and does a scrub-down before hitting the water, together. Men, women, kids, adults, old, young, hot and not. If you’re shy, there isn’t much to do except to either stay home or grit your teeth and hose yourself down.

Below is the Blue Cafe. There is also a Lagoon Bar that you can lounge in before or after bathing. It also serves drinks to the bathers in the water, because what is more relaxing than soaking in hot water and having a cocktail? A new addition to the spa complex is the posh Lava Restaurant that is built into the volcanic rocks.

There are beautiful paths and walkways adorned with volcanic rock surrounding the Blue Lagoon.
