Find out what’s so special about agriturismos and what to expect when you stay in one.
For independent travellers keen to embrace rural Italy, there are hundreds of ‘agriturismos’ across the country offering interesting accommodation options and a chance to sample a few local gastronomic delights.
‘Agriturismos’ are small-scale farms which open their doors to guests, offer a culturally-rich alternative to hotels, and usually serve up some of their own produce at mealtimes.
Often remote, you’re likely to need a car, and you should be prepared for the fact that each establishment will vary in character, ranging from simple and rustic to chic and luxurious. Some places let guests get involved in some of the farm’s activities, although it’s not compulsory — and others simply feed you up with tangy homemade lemon marmalade or bruschetta made with their own tomatoes and olive oil.
Agriturismos emerged after a difficult economic period for small farms between the 1950s and 1970s. As their profits dropped, many farmers abandoned their estates and moved to the city in search of better-paid work. Keen to keep old farming traditions alive, Italy introduced a new law in 1985 that defined ‘Agriturismo’ and gave small-scale farmers permission to supplement their income by accommodating paying guests. Many of the old estates were then restored and now welcome guests who want to get a real taste of rural Italy.
Room Price
An agriturismo is not always an expensive accommodation option. Prices vary dramatically from one to another: some larger establishments have facilities to rival most hotels, with prices to match – while others have just a couple of guest rooms, are far more rustic and cost no more than a basic Bed & Breakfast.
Reservation and Booking
If you prefer to book accommodation before you go, there are several websites that list agriturismos but do not necessarily contain comprehensive listings for any area. Some farms only advertise via their own website, however, so try using Google to search for establishments in the area rather than simply relying on the bigger accommodation agency websites.
Those who prefer to find places to stay as they travel will have plenty of choice in many areas – but during busy holiday periods rooms may be in short supply and your favourite finds may be booked up.
Activities
Some agriturismos offer optional activities at an extra cost such as cooking courses, wine-tasting trips or excursions to local sights. Others may point you in the direction of local hiking trails or pretty towns and villages to visit.
