Porto: Jewel of Northern Portugal

A lazy weekend pottering around Porto.

Porto is a beautiful city located in the Northern region of Portugal.

The city was built along the hillsides overlooking the mouth of the Douro river; ornately tiled cliff-top churches overlook the river valley, with it’s bustling harbour and outstanding architecture. 2,000 years of history.are packed into this pulsating city, it’s continuous growth linked to the important sea trade cultivated by the profiteering merchants over the centuries. The Romans originaly gave the city it’s name ‘Portus’, but most people associate the city with the famous fortified wines that have been produced in this fertile region for the last 700 years.

Strolling around the city one can see many varied monuments, from the cathedral with its Romanesque choir, to the neoclassical Stock Exchange and the typically Portuguese Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara.

This city is a truly vibrant place to visit and well worth a weekend break to sample the seafood and wines.
