The Wave

Wave – about to break, taken on the beach at Alvor, Portugal.

Part of a series of photos on peace and tranquillity. This picture taken from the beach at Alvor, a small fishing village on Portugal’s Algarve coast captures the moment a wave is about to break.  Though the waves were not particularly big that summer day the coast here faces west and the breakers come in from the Atlantic Ocean so there is always a good display.

In this shot the sun shining on the wave gives it a translucent quality which adds a lot of appeal to the photograph.

The point to this series is to offer not suggestions of places to visit but of the kinds of place where people might find relief from the stress and pressure of modern life. There are plenty of lake and river scenes and other ideas for connecting with nature to come if you do not live near the sea. Humans do seem to have a great affinity with water. however so this seemed a goood starting point.

One of the reasons I love shore views like this, apart from the sound and smell of the sea and the openness of the horizon is the beauty of the waves themselves and the regular rhythm with which they break on the shore.
