A Trip with Dolphins and Whales

This trip some five years ago while on holiday in Tenerife was totally amazing. Just actually watching the dolphins and whales in their own save haven – the sea was truly captiavating.

On holiday in Tenerife hubby and I noticed a poster in the hotel lobby advertising a trip to see the dolphins and whales in their natural environment. Being fascinated with the wonders of the deep blue sea we booked the trip for the following day. Just the thought of seeing these magnificent mammals had filled us with excitement!

We boarded the catamaran at Puerto Colon in Player de las Americas, skippered by an Englishman, called Harry. Once everyone was settled, we set sail. It was going to be three hours of sheer bliss! The sea glistened in the sun but a welcome sea breeze was cooling down the stifling afternoon’s heat. I felt comfortable and totally at peace with myself.

Harry’s knowledge of marine life was vast and it was plain to see these beautiful creatures were his passion. Everyone listened to him with keen interest while he explained the wonders of these charming mammals.
Both hubby and I have sea legs. Unfortunately by the time we were half way across to our destination; quite a few of our fellow travelers were below deck; sea sick!

We had to wait quite awhile before the fist sighting. Then all of a sudden there they were dolphins and whales embracing the sea together in total harmony. Out came my camera! The dolphins came up along side the boat; I’m convinced they were posing and showing off as cameras clicked and camcorders followed them. It was so breath taking I just wanted to dive into the sea and swim with them! The feeling it give you was just so amazing. Harry had mentioned earlier on that once we reached a certain place on the trip; should the waters be calm enough anyone who wanted to swim with the dolphins could do so. I could just not stop the adrenalin surging through me. The very thought of actually being able to touch one of these magnificent creatures was overwhelming. I felt so in tune with nature itself and totally mesmerized by the scene before me.

Some thirty minutes later Harry explained the waters were getting too dangerous for anyone to swim. I had noticed the wind’s strength gradually increasing for quite awhile. The cat was also ducking and diving somewhat! For safety’s sake we had to return home. There were disappointed faces all round; with the exception of the suffering below deck. I’m sure most people, given the chance, would have swam with the dolphins.

These stunning, intelligent creatures followed the cat back to a certain point then off they went, free and happy in their own natural world; just how it should be. I can honestly say I’ve not had such a captivating experience since.   Just fabulous.
