Holiday to Spain

A piece of origninal writing about my trip to Spain. This story is based on a real holiday I experienced a few years ago, most parts are true however there are some fiction parts.
If you would like the link to the villa in order to see more pictures of the wonderful property or even to book a holiday this summer there the link is below. I would highly recommend this villa!

Getting of the plane, I was so excited! I had been waiting for this for ages we were finally in Spain! There were nine of us me, my cousin Darcie, my cousin Harrison, my brother Sam, My auntie Nikki, my uncle David and my other auntie Sue, and not forgetting my Mum and Dad. We rushed off the plane once it had landed and ran to the luggage conveyer belt to collect our suitcases. Surprisingly it didn’t take very long for our luggage to come round, which is strange because usually we would be waiting there for hours.

The next step was the final step, waiting for the hire car. We sat in the waiting area, five minutes passes those five minutes turned into ten, and then eventually we reached the full hour mark. That’s right, we had to wait a full hours for the hire car to arrive. When the car finally pulled up we all jumped in, our holiday had officially started.

We sat in the back of the people carrier and sang cheesy road trip songs. But eventually the fun in that wore out; once again we had to wait an hour to arrive at the villa. It had been 45 minutes and we still hadn’t arrived. It suddenly came to us… we were lost. We carried on driving down a straight road until my uncle had the bright idea of looking at a map. After 5 minutes of trying to figure out where we were on the map, we finally released we had gone past the sneaky road coming of the main so we had to turn around and go back.

Finally we reached the turn off point, we turned left and ended up on a mud pathway. We followed the swirling path then suddenly it reached a hill but not just any hill, it was the steepest hill I had ever seen. That wasn’t all it had no boundaries’ around the edge of the path so one tiny slip and we would have all gone over. The steep hill didn’t go up in a straight line it curved round bend but fortunately we made it through. After ridiculous waiting times and making it through a “death trap“we eventually arrived at our villa.

The first thing noticeable about the villa was the color; it was pink! Harrison and Sam weren’t to keen on the color but they got over that fairly quickly. Villa la Sirena was situated in southern Spain, Mezquitilla to be precise. Anyway we got to the villa and all piled out of the car. We walked towards the villa and the owner came out, she greeted us and pass over the keys, once she left it hit us, we had the whole villa to ourselves. The villa was large; well it had to be there were nine of us. There were 5 bedrooms in total and 5 bathrooms. The villa had two “sides” to it side A and side B, and of course it had a pool.

My brother, cousins and I explored the villa whilst the adults did the unpacking. We sat around the pool with our feet hanging in, we begged if we could get in but no, we had to go out for dinner. We all walked down to a restaurant recommended to us and sat around a large table, it had been a long day and we were all starving hungry. The waiter came and he handed out the menu’s we decided what we wanted and the waiter came back over. We told him but he stared at us blankly he didn’t understand a word of English. We then tried to act out what we wanted, as we began to get frustrated we started to look like a group of monkeys playing charades!

The next morning we woke up to no food in the cupboards, so my dad and uncle had to go out and get some food. Whilst they did that everyone else enjoyed themselves by the pool, but two hours had gone and they still hadn’t returned. Everyone started to get worried, but worst of all hungry! Finally they returned but with no food. They claimed all the shops were closed, so once again we had to visit our favorite little restaurant for another game of charades. My Dad and Uncle went out again the following day to find food but the same thing happened, no luck. We later found out that today was the last day of the Spanish fiesta, so tomorrow we could fill our cupboards.

Darcie and I decided to go into town and luckily we found one shop open. We walked in and the shop keeper had an eerie look to him. He had a rough haircut, a long knotted beard, one blue eye and one brown. If I can remember rightly the blue eye was lazy, and as he was reading the paper he still managed to follow Darcie and I around the shop. I was desperate for something to eat so I had no chance but to buy from him. I picked up a chocolate brownie and the price was scribbled on, it was hardly readable, however I could just make it out, 65 cents. I passed the money over to the shopkeeper and Darcie and I got out of there as quickly as we could.

I walked back to the villa pleased with my purchase, when we got back I ate half of my brownie and wanted to make it last so I put the rest in the fridge. When I came back to it an hour later it was gone! I was so annoyed about it but, I have a sweet tooth and I can’t live without sweet things any more than a day. I’m guessing it was Harrison he was always stealing chocolate bars from my aunties cupboard when I went round his house.

It was Thursday night and as one big family we all decided to go out and explore Mezquitilla properly. We jumped in our hired car and drove down to the town, it was only a ten minute drive but that wasn’t including the 5m minutes to get down the steep path. We walked around Mezquitilla and it was 8pm however it was still light. We walked down the promenade and I could smell the fresh sea water smell. We stopped off for something to eat and this time the waiter understood what we were saying. By the time we finished eating it was dark so we went to the town centre. The night life was amazing, the whole town was lit up and a band was performing, all the houses looked the same, they all had that Spanish look to them. In the background I could hear people socializing and live music. It was an enjoyable evening which I remember clearly, after a long night we finally returned to the villa.

The only thing bad I could say about the villa was that on the fifth day we suffered sever ant invasion. Somehow they had got into out room, but we had fun getting rid of them and following the line of ants. Although we enjoyed ourselves by the pool we also enjoyed watching television, believe it or not. In some evenings we sat there for hours watching “Most Haunted” and “The fairly odd parents”. One evening when we were watching TV we were all craving sweet things (I wasn’t the only one). My auntie Sue always had tricks up her sleeve; she got her suitcase and pulled out a box of sweets, which kept us all happy for the night.

On the sixth day my Dad took Darcie, Sam and I to a water park, Harrison decided to stay at the villa, he preferred reading for leisure when he was younger. We arrived at the water park after a 15 minute drive. The water park was fairly big but you had to be a certain height to go on some of the better flumes. This wasn’t so much of a problem for me but for Sam and Darcie it was a different story. It was a hot day and there were no clouds in the sky so it seemed like a good idea to go to a water park. After walking round the park for ten minutes we still hadn’t found a tube which Darcie and Sam were tall enough to get on. We thought we were running out of luck until we found one called “Rats River”. Darcie didn’t feel up for going on so we waited for my brother Sam at the end of the flume. We saw Sam come down the tube and he suddenly stopped, he looked confused and shouted out that he was stuck. He finally had to resort to pushing himself down the slide. What a great water park that was, pushing yourself down the water slide, wasn’t something called water supposed to do that?!?

We were having our last dinner at the villa as we had to go back to England the next day. My auntie cooked some spaghetti (that’s all I had all holiday) as we were eating we had a visitor. It was a large dog I’m not sure what breed it was but its fur was scruffy and it was a dirty grey color, it must have been homeless and somehow got into our villa. We fed it a bit of spaghetti; it stayed for a while then wandered of again – obviously not enhanced enough by spaghetti to stay!

It was the 7th and the last day of our holiday. We quickly ran the video recorder round and then packed our suitcases, I say “we” but it was just the parents. Once we had done that the villa owner met us to pick up the key and check if anything was missing from the villa. Once she gave us the thumbs up we all got in the people carrier and drove to our next destination, the airport. We went past the steep and curvy path quite quickly as we had, had a lot of practice.

After driving around for half and hour I managed to take in all the sights I missed when I was at the villa, the main sight was the sea. As the sun beamed down on it, it glistened and sparkled, the palm trees created a small shadow on the promenade, it was a sight I will always remember. Five minutes later we decided to ask for directions, we pulled up next to a path and asked a couple.

When we first asked them they just stared at us blankly, we asked them again but slower. They managed to understand us, they spoke little English but the man told us to turn right and the women told us to turn left. The couple both looked at each other and started to discuss in English, the way to Malaga airport. After this they started to speak in Spanish but began to raise there voices, we were all sitting in the car unsure as to whether we should drive off. The women ended the argument by slapping the man in the face, and they stormed of in different directions. I advise you never to ask Spanish couples for directions, or you may just split them up! We finally got to the airport just in time for our flight back home to England.

I enjoyed my Holiday to Spain, it was eventful and some parts weren’t what I expected, but most holidays’ aren’t. I would recommend visiting Mezquitilla to anyone. It’s a nice little area and your guaranteed to be entertained!
