There are so many beautiful cities to visit, too many in fact. I have compiled a list of the top 10 European destinations for the summer of 2009.

#1 London, England

For those of you that live in England you may not wish to holiday in your capital. But it is known as one of the famous cities in the world. London is an inviting city with many different cultures, great entertainment and so much history. There are the palaces of the English Royal Family, which is a must-see for history lovers, and the Buckingham Palace, one of the better known palaces of the world. From London, you can also easily visit Ireland, Scotland or Wales, with them all being just a train/airplane journey away.

#2 Paris, France

Known as the city of love. There are so many amazing things that can be found in Paris, one being the infamous Eiffel Tower, which is known to be one of the wonders of the world. There are a few other amazing structures in Paris that should not be missed; the Arc de Triumph and the Cathedral of Notre Dame. If time on your holiday permits, the beaches of France are some of the most beautiful in the world.

#3 Rome, Italy

The climate in Rome is what holiday-makers often look for. It remains unmatched when it come to the sheer aesthetic power of its structures and striking history. There are certain sites of Rome that should not be missed. Two of these are the Vatican and the Coliseum. With tours each hour around the Coliseum, by guides dressed as Gladiators, or you could go on your own. Another major tourist attraction within Rome are the restaurants and cafes.

#4 Amsterdam, Netherlands

One of the biggest draws of Amsterdam is that its highly affordable. It is hot on the destinations list because it doesn’t typically fit the stereotypical European destination. It does have fantastic sites like other destinations, but it has transformed its once seedy red-light district. It is also crazy, complex and amazing.

#5 Barcelona, Spain

Spain is one of the top holiday destinations. Being the second biggest city in Spain, and the capital of Catalonia, it is probably the busiest city in the country. For many people, Barcelona is the cultural capital of Spain and can fill your holiday with amazing sites, exciting memories and beautiful photos. Sites to see are the Sagrada Familia and the Barcelona Cathedral. You also need to see the works of Antoni Gaudi. There are also museums to visit within Barcelona. The dining is excellent and definitely one of a kind.

#6 Florence, Italy

The capital city of Tuscany. Anyone who wants to see architectural magic or wonder should see Florence. This is home to the many minds that set intellectual fire in history like Niccolo Machiavelli. Any person who is looking for aesthetic value and intellectualism on political power will definitely not regret a visit here. The Old Bridge, called Ponte Vecchio, is a unique architectural wonder. This bridge is known for its stores standing on stilts and this is also popular because it is the only building that has survived World War II.

#7 Athens, Greece

Known for its mythology, Athens is the home of 3,000 years of historical data. You cannot miss the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a stone theatre found in the Acropolis of Athens and can accommodate 5,000 people, this is where the Athens festival occurs every year. Another hotspot for tourists is the Zappeion. A building in the Natural Gardens of Athens where official and private meetings are held. The reason this is a must see building is because of its grand architecture and its purpose. It was the first building whose sole goal is the revival of the Olympic Games, the first Olympic Games were held in 1896 and this was not followed until 100 years later.

#8 Berlin, Germany

Just about 70 kilometers away from Poland, Berlin is the capital city of Germany and it is one of the most sought after tourist spots of the world due to its rich political and cultural heritage. Berlin played a major role in European politics and culture. One of the must see buildings found here is the Fernsehturm. This building stands 368 meters or 1,207 feet. This is said to be the second tallest or highest building in all of European Union countries and this was built in 1969.

#9 Venice, Italy

Home of pasta and pizza, Venice is considered as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Also known by different names such as City of Water and City of Bridges. This is because the city is mostly submerged in water. To travel in Venice you need to use Gondolas, what tourists tend to love about this is the driver sings whilst he manoeuvres the boat. Another attraction here is the famous Piazza San Marcos and its pigeons. Hundreds and even thousands of pigeons flock in this plaza and it is just so exhilarating to look at.

The capital of Sweden, it is very rich in history and museums. The official residence of the Royal Family is found in the Stockholm Palace. The Royal Palace referred to here is the Swedish monarch. The other thing that one should definitely not miss is Gamla Stan. This is very popular for it sold buildings and cultural points. The statue of St. Goren et Draken is also a very popular spot. The name stands for St. George and the Dragon.
