A review of the No 16 Restaurant in the Warkworth House Hotel, Northumberland.
No 16 Restaurant in the Warkworth House Hotel stands on the Northumbrian coast overlooking the North Sea. Just up the road are the magnificent medieval ruins of Warkworth Castle, once home of the warlike Percy Earls of Northumberland and the romantic Hermitage that is only approachable by boat. Below is one of the finest sandy beaches in the world.
It is a converted traditional sandstone hotel with an imposing facade. The bar and dinning area, with their old gold and blue decor are comfortable and surprisingly modern.
The welcome is chatty and friendly with the serving team being businesslike in their approach. No 16 serves modern British cuisine with some additions from across the globe.
I liked the smoked chicken breast, apple celery and walnut salad served with a mustard dressing, which really kicked things off. The Craster kipper (smoked locally) pate with red onions, parsley, gooseberry compote, ciabatta and salad leaves was equally good.
Many customers like the honey roast duck with carrots, ginger, pak choi and crispy egg noodles. There is also a tasty slow-cooked blade of beef with tomato and shallot compote.
Desserts include a raspberry crannicken: rolled oats, cream, raspberries and whisky or the lemon posset.
There is a car park in the centre of the village and No 16 is fully accessible to disabled clients.
It is open from noon to 21:30 on seven days a week.
Warkworth is 25 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne and No 16 can be contacted on 01665 711276.
