A review of the Malmaison Hotel in Aberdeen.
ABERDEEN, the Granite City of Scotland and the centre of Britain’s oil industry now has a marvellous new hotel. The city has long been famed as a shopping destination, cultural centre, holiday resort and academic powerhouse, but now the Malmaison Hotel is the place to stay.
It has 80 well-proportioned and comfortable rooms, many with private terraces or balconies. The in-room facilities include flat-screen televisions wit DVD/CD players, mini-fridge, desk and the normal extensive range of Malmaison toiletries, which guests are invited to take. The Balmoral Suite has a blue and grey decor with framed photographs of local views and there is a teak bathtub in the bathroom.
The Gymtonic Fitness Suite and Le Petite Spa are available for the more energetic guests with personal trainers being available.
My favourite spot was the Angel’s Share Whisky Snug with over 250 brands, a tribute to Scotland’s greatest produce, that stands behind a portcullis style metal door. It is a Mecca for lovers of the finest malts. There is a glass section in the floor that allows a glimpse into the wine cellar below.
The bar has a number of intimate ingles with comfortable settees, stools and armchairs that lull the guest into a coma. It is renowned for its cocktails.
There are varying ceiling heights in the Brasserie. One section has seductive lighting and a glass front enables diners see into the butchery. It serves classic dishes, many of which, especially the Aberdeen Angus beef, have been sourced locally.
